Overheard in the lunch line

packages of baconTwo women are in line at AOA's favorite bagel place discussing diet soda:

Woman #1: I'm lucky because I only like diet soda. I don't like the taste of regular soda, so I only drink diet.
Woman #2: Umm... no, I won't drink diet soda because it's made with Splenda or something and that stuff gives you heart attacks.
If I'm going to have a heart attack I want to do it the right way -- with bacon.

I'm with you on this one! Bacon for everyone!

actually, splenda has been reported (though not tested in humans) to be the culprit behind gastrointestinal disorders among a variety of patients whose GI problems seemingly had no easily detectable origin. a hotly debated test by duke university using mice and mice-sized portions of FDA-approved human portions suggested that beneficial and necessarily intenstinal bacterial flora are adversely affected upon 12 weeks of constant exposure to splenda. also, the mouse CYP3A4 liver enzyme homolog (part of the system that detoxifies orally administered drugs in humans) was found to be upregulated. thus, duke researchers concluded that splenda consumption essentially kills the bacteria you need for intestinal health, and prevents orally-administered drugs from being present in ones body long enough at any time to have a clinical effect.

fyi.

as far as the classical artificial sweetener--aspartame--its been reported to have neurological effects such as intense migraines, as aspartame--unlike splenda--is able to cross the blood-brain barrier.

another fyi.

and actually: because of splenda consumption, i can no longer consume bacon. looks i'll have to induce a heart attack some other way (mint chocolate chip ice cream comes to mind--or better yet: funfetti cupcakes. mmmm cupcakes).

What about bacon soda? That would be AWESOME!

@Barold - I'm fairly sure that Jones Soda made a bacon flavored soda. Positive they did gravy, too. Oh, and jelly doughnut.

What a brave young woman. Despite all of the hardships she has endured her main focus is to educate herself in order to spend her life in service to others as a doctor. How inspiring.
