Music this week

The Farewell Drifters

In a variation on the "the week ahead" thing, we're trying "music this week" ... this week. We'll see how it goes. Maybe we'll do this for a while.

On with the show...

Not a comprehensive list. If there's something coming up that you're excited about, please share.

Saves the Day and The Get Up Kids at Northern Lights
It's like emo oldies night. 7:30 pm - $18.50 ahead / $21 day of

Alejandro Escovedo at Helsinki Hudson
Austin's eclectic icon. 8 pm - $25

James McMurtry at Valentine's
with Jonny Burke
Texas rock from Austin. Stephen King's a fan, apparently. 8 pm - $20

Robin Trower at The Egg
He was the guitarist for Procol Harum, before forming his own "power trio" (because if you're going to have a trio, it might as well be a power trio). 8 pm - $33.75 / $43.75

Alive at Five: Marshall Tucker Band
with Collette & The Mudcats
Southern rock. 5 pm - free

Lar Lubovitch Dance Company at SPAC
Famous choreographer's company dances to Coltrane, Brahms, and Philip Glass. 8 pm - $30

Hank & Cupcakes at Putnam Den
His name's not actually "Hank," nor is hers "Cupcake."9 pm - $5

Nine Votes Short at Valentine's
with Public Noise Concern, Heroes & Martyrs, Uncle Joels Comb
Local ska and punk. (For fun, here's NVS playing "Wonderwall.) 8:00

The Farewell Drifters at Caffe Lena
They're from Nashville. They have haircuts make them looks sort of like latter day Beatles. They sound a bit like the combination of those things. 8 pm - $15 ahead / $17 at the door

Sirsy at Putnam Den
9 pm - $5 ahead / $10 at door

Black Mountain Symphony at Valentine's
with Platypus and The Landlines
Genre-defying. 7:30 pm

Dan Zanes and Elizabeth Mitchell at MASS MoCA
Kids music that parents can also like. 2 pm - $20 adults / $10 kids

Timbre Coup at Red Square
with The Fundimensionals
"Improg" jam band. 8 pm - $10

Recently announced...

July 20: Lil Wayne at SPAC
Has a spot on iPod One, apparently. $69.75 and up

July 24: Times New Viking at Valentine's
Noisy indie rock from Ohio. (All the best stuff is.)

August 25: Barry Manilow at SPAC
Your mom is stoked for this show. $59.50 and up

ps: the sophomore Severe Severe album is out this week too! You can get more details at

I would almost fly back to Albany to see Times New Viking. They are the toppest notch.

Great idea! I like the week ahead posts a lot; this should be another useful weekly feature.

Huh. I was at the print shop when the man was making up the posters for Times New Viking. Small worlds, etc.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.

... the Helderberg neighborhood is fabulous for Trick or Treating, maybe too much so. We always see families coming from other parts of Albany by the van load - being dropped off at one end and working their way to the other. Lots of houses in friendly neighborhoods = a packed and good time. It is also rumored that a few adults dress up and roam the streets handing out adult beverages to other adults. Again, just a rumor...
