Scouting the places beyond the pines

place beyond the pines location inquiryThere were a few reports this week that pre-production crews for The Place Beyond the Pines, the movie starring Ryan Gosling and Bradley Cooper, were scouting locations around the Schenectady area.

Jason tweeted that the film's director, Derek Cianfrance, actually stopped by his house Thursday. And @BUNKRE shared the flyer a location scout had left on his house in the Old Niskayuna neighborhood. That's the flyer on the right -- there's a bigger version after the jump.

The flyer says crews are "tentatively scheduled" to film in the neighborhood sometime in September. And the description of the film:

Luke [Ryan Gosling] is a professional motorcycle rider who turns to bank robberies to support his newborn son. But when he crosses paths with a rookie police officer [Bradley Cooper] their violent confrontation spirals into a tense generational feud. THE PLACE BEYOND THE PINES is a rich dramatic thriller that traces the intersecting lives of fathers and sons, cops and robbers, heroes and villains.

It's not any more far-fetched than Angelina Jolie jumping from trucks while being chased by the CIA with the Albany skyline in the background.

By the way: the name Schenectady comes from a Mohawk word that roughly means "beyond the pine plains."

Can't wait to stalk the set when they roll into town for filming! Please keep us cinephiles updated!

They scoped out Leah The Nosher's house, too! I know where she lives... will sell you the address in return for baked goods. ;)

I know that Schenectady means "Across the pines" or beyond the pine plains or whatever. And I know this movie is being filmed in Schenectady. But I still don't fully get this movie's plot connection to Schenectady. Does this feud between the motorcycle guy and the cops take place in Schenectady?

Or...is this just a working title inspired by the filming location to throw people off?

Because honestly, not that many people know the significance of "The Place Beyond the Pines." I'm mean most local people don't even know what or where the pine bush is. So it's not like the people of Schenectady identify themselves as living in "The Place Beyond the Pines." It's actually a pretty cheesy title for a cops and robber movie isn't it? I mean I could see if this was a movie about Mohawk Indians in the 17th century or something. Are there Mohawks in this movie?

I heard yesterday that there will also be some filming in Vale Cemetery.

Not sure if the producers will be happy about people seeing this link, but a friend of mine came across this site with photos and notes about all of the potential places they are scouting;

Enjoy!

I don't live in a scouted Schenectady neighborhood, but Bradley and Ryan are still welcome anytime. :)

@Lizz: Wow! I just checked out this address and it not only lists the addresses of people willing to have their homes used for the movie, but their phone numbers, first names, and other private information. Some examples: "usu. home around 5pm," "nice young couple with dog," "family away 6/28-7/8." That's scary! If I were those families that allowed my home to be used for filming, I'd be pretty upset if information like that got out.

@lizz what is the password for the smugmug site????

hmmm i also tried to get on the smugmug site and can't :(... however i have the next few days off and I will be riding around schenectady to see if there are any signs of the "stars"

While I understand why they're saying there isn't enough demand, I also am positive I would use cabs more if they were even slightly more affordable and reliable. I have zero interest in using the taxis in Albany, and would rather alter my plans (if possible) than use their service. I feel like the cab companies are saying this is a demand issue, when really it's just a "I dislike you so much, I'd rather find ANY alternative to avoiding you" issue.
