Where to get ice skates sharpened?

ice skate blade heelNancy emails:

Now that the ESP rink is open, where can I get my figure skates sharpened?

If you can't remember the last time you had your skates sharpened -- and you've been skating on them -- it might be time.

Got a suggestion for Nancy? Please share!

Kemp's in Latham is the best. I have been skating for 18 years, and it is the only place that I will get them sharpened.

Skate Sharpening: Kemps Hockey on Rte. 9 in Latham is the best; also Hockey Town at the Latham Circle; the pro shop at the Albany County Skating Rink (behind the airport); the YMCA in Bethlehem (check for skate sharpening times).

Hope this helps!

I live with hockey players, and we sharpen a lot of skates. For hockey skates, we prefer Hockey Town right off the Latham Circle. Also, most of the other (non-ESP) skating rinks will sharpen them right on site. I recently had my figure skates sharpened at the Swinburne Rink in Albany, and I know you can get skates sharpened at the rink at the Bethlehem YMCA, and at the Albany County Hockey facility. Happy skating!

Well it has been 4 years since my son’s stopped playing hockey but here are a few suggestions for you:
The Albany County Hockey Facility (ice rink near the airport)
Goldstock’s Freeman’s Bridge Rd Glenville
Kemp’s Rt. 9 Latham
Play it again sports Rt. 7 Niskayuna
Hockey town at Latham circle

We just went to the ESP skating rink yesterday and the rental shop sharpened my husband's skates in about 5 minutes.

The Albany-Colonie Hockey Facility by the airport has a skate sharpening station that I remmeber as being fairly cheap.

They do it there, right at the ESP rental place. I think it's $7.

There are a couple good sharpeners in the area aside from the expensive figure skating pros. Clark at Goldstock's has done my blades for years. Also, Larry at Swinburne and Tony at the Bethlehem Y know what they're doing with figure skates.

Play It Again Sports in Latham does a great job, I think it's $5. Their advantage is that they're open at times other than open skating.

As of last weekend, the Knickerbacker Rink in Lansingburgh was not doing sharpening, their machine was down. As far as I can figure they're the only location in Rensselaer County, unless someone knows if HVCC sharpens.

Thanks for the suggestions. I did go to Kemp's and got my figure skates sharpened. They also had laces, which I needed terribly. They sharpened while I waited and they look good. It was way too cold for me today to try the ESP rink. But, I hope to try them later this week. I'll let you know.

I got my skates sharpened last year at the shoe repair place on third st in downtown troy. It was 5 bucks and they did great.

The Hudson Valley Community College rink sharpens skates during open skate hours - weekdays noon to 2 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday, 4 - 6:15 p.m.

In my experience, the pro shop at the Albany County Hockey Facility does a great job sharpening skates.

The guys at Hockeyton ProShop up in Latham are awesome. You'll wait for a very good set of edges, and you can view thousands of old time hockey photos and NHL articles on the walls. Pretty awesome.

Hockeytown up on the lath circle has been sharpening my two daughters figure skates for three years. The consistency without error is worth the wait when they are backed up sharpening for others or in the summer when their hours get cut back. Owners ate always there and they have a nice selection of figure skates and tights for female skaters. Nice to see!

We have 3 hockey players in our household and a figure skater. We have tried various places for sharpening and after finding Hockeytown, I have been going there for years. The skates are always cut correctly and to the way that my boys want them. My youngest and oldest like their skates sharpened totally different and it's obvious the guys at hockeytown know what they preach. For years they have been claiming NHL Quality sharpening. Must be the case. Their reputation is just that. Go see Jay and Jeff.

Hockeytown one, the rest are a ar placed 2nd - when it comes to having your goalie skates done correctly.

Excellent sharpening, my kids loved the store and didn't want to leave. Being from Montreal myself, this is a great type of hockey store where they surely know customer service while offering every service a pro shop should. Also had my daughters figure skate restitched on the spot.
