Where to go paddleboarding?

paddleboardingElisabeth emails:

I want to paddleboard! Where can i do it in the capital region?

Here's a little more about paddleboarding -- as the name implies, it basically involves standing on something like a surfboard and paddling. We get impression it's become more popular over the last few years.

Got a suggestion for Elisabeth? Please share!

In fact, their new splash page features paddleboarding.

Kinderhook Lake - Public access from County Route 28 at the outlet of Kinderhook Lake in the Village of Niverville

I would not go out on Lake George. Too many drunks behind the wheel of much too powerful boats and the rattlesnakes up there swim in the lake! No thank you.

You do realize we're at least 200 miles inland right?

Stand-up paddling is Adirondack Sports & Fitness' June issue cover article...

Here are three SUP places that I can recommend and are all on the water - listed in proximity to Albany:

1) The Boat House on Mohawk River (Schenectady) - Rentals and sales... 393-5711 or www.boathousecanoeskayaks.com

2) Kayak Shak on Saratoga Lake (Fish Creek outlet) - Rentals only... 587-9788 or www.saratogakayak.com

3) Lake George Kayak on Lake George (Bolton Landing) - Rentals and sales... 644-9366 or www.lakegeorgekayak.com

4) Patty's Water Sports Boutique on Lake George (Cleverdale) - Rentals and sales... 656-9353 or www.pattyswatersports.com

Our family (kids, 11 and 13) just tried it on Sunday, each on our own boards. The learning curve is quick, so get out there and have fun!

LG Kayak puts in behind the Sagamore in an inlet protected from powerboats. Speed enforcement is tightly controlled near the shorelines, where one wouls use a SUP. @Jamband, life is full of risks, and I'd take the chance encounter with a swimming rattler to be on Lake George in the summer any day. Nothing's gained by being timid.

Elisabeth! I would like to go paddle boarding with you!

Rattlesnakes don't swim. However, water snakes do. The water snake is found in and around almost any waterbody or wetland in New York State. As an adult, it is a stout animal typically dark brown to black with lighter-colored bands and splotches along its length. This is most pronounced in young individuals (adults may appear solid black). It is the only large (up to 42 inches) water snake in our range. This species is frequently called or mistaken for a cottonmouth (water moccasin); this latter species is a large venomous snake that does NOT occur within our state borders.

I took a lesson with my 2 kids 9&11 with Marty from Hudson Valley SUP. They are located in Kingston but we went out of Catskill. He was great with the kids and had us up and paddling in no time!

Talk about a business that's really exploded recently. I clicked on 30 or so of these, and only found a couple that have been around for longer than the past ten years! Here's hoping the next ten years are just as good for this business.
