Columbus Day is Monday. It's one of those unevenly-observed holidays, so if you're headed out for whatever and you're not sure it will be open, it's a good idea to check.

The Color Purple
Tuesday-Saturday: The touring production of the Tony-winning Broadway musical version of The Color Purple continues at Proctors. Tuesday-Saturday various times -- $20 and up

Sex With Strangers
Tuesday-Sunday: Capital Rep continues its production, Sex With Strangers. The production runs through October 15. Tuesday-Sunday various times -- $20 and up

Tape Face
Thursday: The mime/clowning/prop comedy entertainer Tape Face is at Troy Music Hall. "So what does he do exactly? Well, simply mentioning any aspect of this diverse show would be a disservice - the less you know the more you will enjoy this show." Thursday 7:30 pm -- $27

Tuesday: The Front Parlor storytelling series is back at The Ale House in Troy. This month's theme: "Misunderstanding." Tuesday 7:30 pm

Arts and sciences

Skylar Kergil
Wednesday: Transgender activist -- and Skidmore alum -- Skylar Kergil will be at Skidmore for a talk about his work. "His [Youtube] videos, which offer an honest and thorough look at the process of gender transition, have educated, uplifted, and inspired thousands." Wednesday 7 pm, Palamountain Hall -- free

Kurt Andersen
Thursday: Author/journalist/radio host Kurt Andersen will be at UAlbany to talk about his book Fantasyland: How America Went Haywire: A 500-Year History. It's the kickoff for the NYS Writers Institute "Telling the Truth in a Post-truth World" symposium this Friday and Saturday. Thursday 7 pm -- $30 (includes a copy of the book)

Iris
Thursday: The Opalka Gallery on the Sage Albany campus is showing Iris, the documentary about fashion and design icon Iris Apfel. There will be a panel discussion following the film. Thursday 6:30 pm -- free

Startup Tech Valley

Wednesday: The Startup Tech Valley series makes its way to Saratoga Springs this month for a night of presentations at The National Museum of Horse Racing & Hall of Fame. A handful of startup companies -- ranging from agriculture to tech -- will be giving short talks about what they have going on. Wednesday 5:30 pm -- free
