Repair options for an old slate roof?

gray slate roof CC BY 2.0 Chilanga CementAllison emails:

My early 19th century slate roof needs repairing. I know that you posted this question in the past but it was 7 years ago and some of the suggested contractors have retired or are out of business. This has proven to be a difficult search considering the amount of slate roofs around the city. Thanks!

Bonus points to Allison for checking if someone has already asked this question. And we're happy to post it again given the time that's passed and, it sounds like, how things have changed.

Good a contractor or suggestion for Allison? Please share! And sentence or two about why you're suggesting a contractor can be a big help.

Eric Braymer does a lot of slate roof work and restoration. I used him to inspect a home I was looking to purchase that had a slate roof. Very knowledgeable. Call him at 518-258-6787 or email ebraymer@gmail.com.

At our previous home, we had Bruce Adams replace our slate roof but he can also do repairs. Bruce and his team did a great job.

I don't have a slate roof, but have had enough friends ask for recommendations that I keep an eye out for contractors. I recently saw a contractor's truck with a sign that read "Slate Roof Repairs, 40 years experience, (518)355-6460" Again, not making a recommendation, but may be worth getting a quote, given the limited number of contractors that still do this type of work.

I will definitely be following this post. I had Star Roofing give me a quote on my slate roof but I haven't pulled the trigger yet.

Joe Faricane, 518-432-8098. He was honest about what needed to be done and what could wait, fast and cleaned up after himself.

Joe Ferracane, the BEST. 518-432-8098. Fair, reasonable, hard to get a hold of because he is in such demand.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I ended up hiring Eric Braymer. He got up on my roof in January for an estimate and quick, emergency repair. He is super honest about what needs to be done and is VERY passionate about saving historic slate roofs when it makes sense. His price is also, in my mind, very fair.

Do something at a state park maybe? We had our anniversary at Thacher Park. There are a lot of logistics when you do it that way, but it's a beautiful view, there is a pavilion so you don't need a tent, and they have bathrooms so you don't need to rent potties.
