Where to dispose of an American flag?

American flag blue skyEric asks via the Facebook:

Question for your readers: I have worn out American flags which need proper disposal. Are there any places in the Albany - Saratoga area with drop boxes? Most VFW and American Legion posts I've visited don't have any, and are not open during the day.

New York State occasionally collects flags for disposal -- it did so just this month (collections ended last week).

Have a suggestion for Eric? Please share.

There's a drop box in the lobby of the Bethlehem Public Library.

Gettysburg Flag Works will take old flags for disposal. They're located at 715 Columbia Turnpike in East Greenbush.

The VFW in Colonie off 155 (near line bush) has a drop box for them.

Generally, Boy Scout troops provide this service. If you give the flag to your local troop, they'll respectfully and properly retire the flag at their next campfire. I was witness to many such flag ceremonies as a Scout growing up (and I'm 23, so this is recent history and I'm sure they still do it).

Your local Boy Scout troop would be happy to take a flag in need of disposal, or you may want to try the APD or a local VFW post.
