Farewell, Hello Pretty City
After 16 years, two radio stations, and one move across the continent, Laura Glazer announced this week that she's ending the local radio show Hello Pretty City.
The last episode will air Sunday, November 4 on WEXT at 8 pm.
Glazer started the music show on WRPI in 2002, about a year after moving to Albany. Her distinctive voice drew people in, and she became a part of local art and music circles. In 2010 the show shifted to WEXT, gaining a larger audience. And she continued producing it even after a move to Portland, Oregon in the fall of 2016.
Laura is, in our experience, a delightful, interesting person. It was a fact made clear again this week while corresponding with her about the decision to stop making Hello Pretty City...

Sometimes, when you're feeling the futility and sadness of a cold November Monday, the thing to do, rather than fight it, is to just go with it. Exit Factor winner Molly Durnin
Last night AOA joined WEXT and Paul Antonell of Clubhouse Studios to help judge the Exit Factor. Ten local bands and solo artists competed for a chance to perform this Saturday night at the Capital Area Indie Fest at The Egg.
The event was a lot of fun, and we met some good local musicians. But the act that blew all the judges away was Molly Durnin. Durnin won the slot hands down. From the moment she stepped on the stage, she owned it.
One of our fellow judges, WEXT's Chris Wienksays of Molly, "She may evoke a familiar sound or style in your head. Maybe you think she has a sound like so-and-so, or something, but often times unique voices like Molly's do that to you. Her on-stage presence is effervescent. She just exudes a feeling that shows you she is at once happy to be there, and almost like she can't believe people would want to see her perform."
Judge Paul Antonell, a music engineer who's worked with Natalie Merchant, Rusted Root, Carley Simon, and a long list of other big names, was an instant fan.
We'd buy a ticket to hear her play again.
Runner up Bridgette Guerrette reminded us of the British singer Ellie Goulding, and we were were surprised to learn she's still a teenager. We're sure we'll be hearing more from her. There's a clip of her after the jump.
Molly Durnin joins Stellar Young (nee The City Never Sleeps), The Hearing Aides, Tor Loney, and High Bridge North, odi Shaw, Sandy McKnight on Saturday at Indie Fest. Tickets are $15.
Thanks to host Christina Dellea, and the Columbia Arts team for putting it on, and for inviting us to participate.

Exit Dome 4
Our friends over at WEXT are having a benefit concert to support the station this Saturday -- and the lineup is excellent:
A $60 pledge gets you two tickets to the show. That might seem like a lot -- but the money is going to support a great radio station. And if it helps keep WEXT on the air for another year, it's a pretty good deal. (And even if you're not up for the show, you could hit 'em a few bucks. It is pledge drive time.)
WEXT makes the Capital Region a more interesting place to live, both through the music it plays and its support of local artists. We listen so much that it's now kind of hard to imagine what it'd be like to live here without it.
Yep, we're probably a little biased. We know Chris, Dave and some of the other people over there -- and we're happy we do. It's fair to say they rock.

Hello Pretty City update
We heard from our friends over WEXT this afternoon that Laura Glazer's Hello Pretty City show will make its Exit 97.7 debut on April 4. The show will run Sundays from 8-10 pm.
Hello Pretty City has long been a staple on WRPI, but a change in Laura's schedule prompted her to make the move to WEXT. As she wrote on her blog:
Please, kind listener, know that I'm not leaving WRPI for any reason other than my schedule is changing and I need to be at work on weekday mornings. I am truly thankful to be able to find a way to continue doing the radio show, even though it will be on another station.
Laura's planned a "celebration concert" for the show this Friday at Valentine's featuring Brown Bird, The Charlie Watts Riots, Pony in the Pancake, and The Landlines. Tickets are $8. Show starts at 8 pm.

The Exit Dome concert
Our friends at WEXT are holding another benefit concert two weeks from today (October 23). There's great group of bands lined up: Super 400 (that's them on the right), Eric Margan and the Red Lions, Sean Rowe and Sarah Pedinotti and Chris Kyle from Railbird.
You can get two tickets to the show by pledging $60 to the station (you can also swing a single ticket by contacting the station directly: 1-800-272-6492). The show starts 7:30 pm on the 23rd at WMHT's studios in the North Greenbush.
We're big fans of WEXT. Chris and Dave and the gang are great supporters of local music. And the station makes the Capital Region a more interesting place to live.
