Remember earlier this week when Governor David Paterson said he ,"didn't break the law" with his marital infidelities? Oops. The folks at The NY Times asked a couple of lawyers and yes, he actually did. In New York State adultery is a class B misdemeanor punishable by up to 90 days in jail or a $500 fine. Of course it's barely ever enforced and needs the testimony of a third party to stick. Still-- it's a law. Now what's the penalty for breaking that law at the Days Inn on 94th Street? Because if there isn't one--there should be.

Mary and partner,
Puberty was a long, long time ago. Policy, state budgetary and otherwise, that's what interests me.
Why, I respectfully ask and you will no doubt decline to publish, do you retain a 14-year-old's fixation with adultery?
I'm not married to David Paterson. Or his wife. That's their issue. Not mine. Why, I must ask, have you decided to make the Patersons' marital fidelity or lack thereof your personal fascination?
P.S. No, I don't work for David Paterson or the state Democratic Party. I'm not even a Democrat for Moses's sake. I just find this constant refrain on the Patersons' marriage a frighteningly simplistic manner by which one, or several, can refrain from considering the real policy and political issues, economic, social and otherwise, that have such a pressing and personal impact on our daily lives.

This post was not meant to be about David Paterson as much as the adultery laws in NY State.
We were surprised to hear how they worked. Thought others might be too.

I don't think Mary and Greg are fixated on adultery. And isn't it their job to fill people in on what's going on? It isn't their fault most of the news right now is about people boffing one another. I appreciate their unbiased selection of the local news coverage.
