This American Life - Live!

Act One: Pay Up. Act Two: Popcorn and Candy. Act Three: Black-Rimmed Glasses, Closeup.

Ira Glass is gonna be huge. Or, at least, he's going to look that way when TAL broadcasts a live show to movie theaters across the country on May 1. Here's how the promo material describes it:

On Thursday, May 1st acclaimed radio and television host Ira Glass will bring the wildly popular show This American Life to the big screen for a one-night only event. Glass debuts never-before-seen extraordinary, funny and true stories from everyday life, shows outtakes, and answers audience questions. This exclusive theatre event will be broadcast LIVE from New York via satellite to select movie theatres nationwide.

In this case, "select" includes the theater at Crossgates. Tickets go on sale today and they're $20. Ouch. This American life kind of hurts.

TAL began a sort-of television show about a year ago....I'm not sure what cable station it's on (we don't have cable) - but if you're a Netflix subscriber, you can get the DVD's sent to your home, or watch instantly on-line via Netflix.

He's going to be huge?

His first name is Ira.

Ira does your taxes. Ira cleans your teeth. Ira works some Grade 22 job of which no one's ever heard.

Ira does not become a media star.

The TAL TV show is on Showtime. Thanks for the tip about watching online with Netflix!

Mark:

Too late. Every female yuppie under age 50 secretly pines for Ira.

I wanted to go to this event, but I had thought that the tickets would be closer to movie-ticket prices. This gives me pause.

Still, cheaper than his live appearance at the Linda this fall:

Laurie,

Be practical, dear.

The Linda is the Lincoln Center of Albany. The history. The ambiance. The folding metal chairs.

How can anyone north of The Big Apple dare to compete with the one, the only, The Linda?

P.S. Will Ira be offering advice on IRAs, root canal work, and the latest projects at the New York State Center on The Study of Studies before or just after his appearance?

I was in the audience at Mohonk Mountain House this winter when Ira Glass was a featured guest during the Word Weekend produced by Will Shortz. Glass was enormously entertaining and, despite some recent lambasting by media critics who maintain that Glass manipulates his interview subjects, I will pay $20 to see him. He's worth it.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
