Cheever, Welty and Capote wrote there, Bernstein composed there and Joe from the NY State DOT parks there. Correction... parked there.
For about 20 years car pooling commuters have been leaving their vehicles on a strip of land just outside the gates of Yaddo, the artists retreat next to exit 14 on the Northway in Saratoga Springs. It was never officially designated a park and ride -- it just sort of happened, a small strip of free land right next to the highway where vandals weren't likely to wander... why not. You never really thought about it, the cars were just there. In a world where everything is tracked, watched, and overseen, it was one of the few things left that just sort of popped up and remained unregulated. It was like hitching your horse to the post outside the supply store -- the wild west of parking in a civilized world.
But now it's gone the way of the horse and buggy. Sure it's safer...and it looks better. It's one more Spa City rough spot smoothed over. That's good. Isn't it?

Kind of disappointing the state would do this. The park and rides that are located at exit 15 and exit 14ish, are not as convenient as this was. They could have made it look better and allowed parking at the same time. A compromise would have been better. By saving gas, and being kind to the environment by car pooling, you think that they would be more accommodating rather than getting rid of it.
