Looking for a pool?

Thumbnail image for Pool_Photo.jpgSo yesterday's post about the to-do over Saratoga's public pools opening so late in the season prompted some A-towners to say, "Hey, what about us". We did a little checking and here's what we found.

The city of Albany has 5 public pools and 3 "spray pads" where you can cool down for free. But not so fast-- you've got the same problem as the Saratogians. The spray pads are open now but the pools don't open until June 27th. Why so late? Apparently the life guards are studying for finals. The rec department says they don't have enough college guards and the high school guards are--umm--still in high school.

Before you ask, Troy and Schenectady have the same issue. Schenectady has four public pools but they're closed until June 30th. Troy's rec department says they're looking at July 4th as an opening day for the South End and Knickerbocker pools.

So what do you do if your hot right now? Go to the beach. Beaches at Grafton and Moreau lakes have been open since Memorial Day. And don't forget your sunscreen.

i like the public bath #2 in albany's south end. it's a scary and tiny indoor pool, but it gets the job done. if you go in the evening, you don't have to deal with any kids.

Anyone have any idea if they are going to run the splash pad at the park on Rosemont and the one at Ridgefield park? I was under the impression that they both ran from 4th of July until Labor day... but I don't see them listed on the Albany pool page... or included in this article... Last year the Rosemont one was turned on sporadically, but every time I tried to go to Ridgefield it was never on!

According to the folks at the Albany recreation dept. the spray pads should already be operating.

I live near the rosemont one and it hasn't been turned on yet. We tried to take my daughter to get away from the heat of the past few days and NO LUCK.
And what is with the ridgefield one? It never got turned on last year!

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
