Stuff to do this weekend

grafton_lake.jpgThis weekend marks the unofficial start of summer for those of us still stuck on the academic calendar. School is out, the pools are opening, the evening air smells of neighboring barbecues and there's plenty of fun stuff to do. Here are some of our picks:

Troy Night Out!
It's the last Friday of the month. Collar City shops are open late, there's music and art and all kinds of good stuff. Don't forget the official unofficial after-party at Revolution Hall.

Garage Band Night
The Albany Public Library's Garage Band series continues with with Ben Karis-Nix and Scientific Maps. 6pm Friday at the Elk St. Parking Garage at the back entrance of the Main Library, 161 Washington Ave.

Melissa Etheridge
Melissa's revival tour stops at Albany's Palace Theater Saturday night at 8. Ticket's range from $37 to $102.

Catch a movie
It's hot and muggy outside, but the theater's are air conditioned. Don't know what you want to see? Here are a few options:
+ The South African comedy Bunny Chow is at Proctors Friday and Saturday nights. The comedians who made it have been called South Africa's answer to Cheech and Chong--so if that's your thing you can see it for only $6.
+ The documentary Young at Heart is at the Saratoga Film Forum. Friday at 8 and Sunday at 7. $6
+ Kid-friendly pick: Wall-E. From the creators of "Finding Nemo" comes a story of robot luv. (Yes, it really is kid friendly.)

Food and Film
Two great things that go great together. The Troy Food Cooperative and the Troy Cinema and Visual Arts Group are sponsoring a Food and Film Festival Saturday in Troy's Barker Park. It features films by local filmmakers that celebrate food. There's also music, cooking demonstrations and stuff for the kids to do.

Freihofer Jazz Festival at SPAC
A whole weekend of jazz with Dianne Reeves, Chick Correa, Al DiMeola, Terrence Blanchard...you get the idea.

Sgt Dunbar
Sgt Dunbar and the Hobo Banned are doing their thing at The Grand Street Community Arts Center on Saturday night at 8.

Kentucky in Saratoga
Matthew Loiacono and the Upstate Kentucky Choir will perform at Caffe Lena Sunday Night.

Swim
Just in case the forecasters are wrong, the beaches at Grafton and Moreau State Parks are open. And so is the Victoria Pool. Don't forget your sunscreen!

Got another idea? Tell us about it.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.

Albany tightened its rules for shoveling snowy sidewalks last winter -- so how'd that work out?
