The story behind the PRVRT graffiti art

PRVRT tag on Delaware Ave

"Unnatural Selection" by Mr. PRVRT

By Jessica Pasko

We couldn't help but notice this piece of art along Delaware Avenue in Albany. It turns out the commissioned spray-and-stenciled piece is the work of A-Town graffiti artist Mr. PRVRT.

Here's some backstory...

PRVRT is part of a trio of street artists called the Playful Maidens of Spray. Along with Dwell and Unit, PRVRT has taken on the task of fancy-ing up many of the area's abandoned buildings and signs.

They've also gone upscale (not to mention legal), creating such commissioned works as the mural "Pinstripe Marauder" on the outside of the Spectrum Theater (below) and in shows at the Albany Center Galleries.

But their true artistic love still lies with leaving unannounced works of art -- AKA illicit graffiti -- in inconspicuous areas, on plywood and old metal. They post a lot of their pieces, both commissioned and impromptu, on Mr. PRVRT's Flickr photo stream.

Wow - thanks! You've solved a long standing mystery for me. I pass that piece on Delaware Ave every day and every day I wonder what it is and where it came from. I love it. Never would've tied it to the piece on the Spectrum
