Stuff to do this weekend

sci-fi movie posters

It's a Sci-Fi Geekfest this weekend at Proctors!

No, it's not officially fall yet. But it kinda feels like it. Looking for a way to celebrate the first "unofficial" weekend of Autumn? Here are a few options.

It Came From Schenectady
If Sci-fi is your thing, this is your lucky weekend. The "It Came From Schenectady" film festival is going on all weekend long at Proctors. It's a 24 hour sci-fi movie marathon that includes the restored 50th anniversary edition of Forbidden Planet, Barbarella, Blade Runner:The Final Cut and a short film collection. $45 at the door for the full festival. $35 in advance. $20 in blocks.

Soco Music Experience
This free music festival includes bands like Jusitice, MGMT, the Erotics, The Crayons, Severe Severe and the Whigs. How could this possibly be free? It's a promotional event.
Soco=Southern Comfort. Yes, you have to be 21 to get in. Saturday at 2PM

Alex Torres on The Plaza
Hispanic Heritage month kicks off this weekend with a Celebration on The Empire State Plaza on Saturday. Alex Torres, Tiempo, Libre and Hermanos Mariachi Queridos Amgos are playing. 3-9PM. Free.

Who's up for stickball?
It's too late to play, but you can still watch a stickball game or two at this weekend's tournament in Troy.

The Sadies at Valentine's
This alt-country band from Toronto is known for collaborating with artists like Neko Case and The Tragically Hip. Their live shows are pretty high energy. They'll be at downstairs at Valentine's Saturday night at 7.

Yum, carrots
Celebrate all things carrot (yes, that includes cake) at the 30th Annual Carrot Festival at Congregation Agudat Achim in Niskayuna. Music by The McKrells, arts and crafts, kids stuff. Sunday 10-4:30. Free

Pick some apples!
Eat an apple right off the tree. Or take it home and turn it into pie! Here's a guide to
farms that let you pick your own.

Farmers' markets
Now's the time to get the fall bounty. The markets in Saratoga and Troy are open Saturday from 9AM to 1PM

Eat outside!
It's not too hot. It's not too cold. It's just right to dine alfresco. Don't know where to go?
Check out the Capital Region Outdoor Dining Map.

So, what are you doing this weekend?

Comments

Artie Lange (from Howard Stern, Dirty Work, etc) is at Proctor's tonight as well.

The 2nd annual Vegetarian Expo is being held in Saratoga on Saturday from 10am-5pm.

Forget Schenectady! For the price of a beer and and an indigestible burrito, you can see those movies for free at Bombers!

Granted, there'll be no sound and you'll be surrounded by brainless co-eds trying not to barf on the way to the scary toilets - but it'll be nearly free!

Stock up on Pepto first, tho.

Self-guided cheese tour. Mmmm cheese. Cheeeeese.

It also appears to be the Salem HarvestFest, which is basically same bat time, same bat place.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.

Albany tightened its rules for shoveling snowy sidewalks last winter -- so how'd that work out?
