Back to basics at White House | Black Market

By Amy Brozio-Andrews

White House Black Market dressThe rumor is true: White House | Black Market, a higher-end women's clothing store located in Stuyvesant Plaza, carries exclusively black and white items. Full of pants, shirts, blouses, dresses, skirts, and all manner of accessories from shoes to scarves to clutches to jewelry, shawls, the style is contemporary and elegant for casual, work and dressy occasions.

While you might think that a store full of only black, white, and black and white clothing could be boring, the variety of styles ensures that it's not.

The sales staff is attentive without being pushy (I was even asked if I wanted to borrow a pair of heels when I tried on a dress) and the atmosphere is decidedly upscale (the mini-chandeliers in the dressing room are gorgeous!). The prices were a bit high for my budget (for example, there's no way I could afford a $68 scoop-neck t-shirt, even if it does have pretty rhinestones on it) but the sales rack was pretty reasonable.

I wasn't planning on buying anything, but the cream-colored brushed cotton pants with a hint of stretch felt so soft I couldn't resist. Plus, they were marked down to $49.99 from $78.99, plus an additional 30% off. The pants seemed to run a little small (I waffle between two sizes and was definitely more comfortable in the larger) while the dresses and tops run more true to size.

My favorite was the white satiny dress with the light gathered black overlay that's belted in the middle. At $168, it certainly isn't cheap but it did make me feel like a million dollars. The nice thing about White House | Black Market is that you can complete an outfit -- dress, shoes, bag, necklace, earrings, etc. -- all in one place.

On a Thursday night, it was pretty quiet, but I would think this place will become very popular come the holiday party/New Year's season this winter and for women shopping for outfits to wear to weddings and dressy parties.

I have shopped here and although the prices are a little out of my league, I bought an outfit there that when I wore it (3 times now to 3 different crowds) people have told me how great I looked and that I must have been working out (hah!) and where did I get that outfit.? (I dodged that question...I don't want to give away my secrets!)

I love that shop. It's a place I'll go if I buget for a little splurge or when the clearance rack gets a few additions. The sales staff is great, very helpful but not pushy. I bought a dress there and I've gotten lots of compliments.

I love that store! It's definitely THE place I go to when I need a dress for a special occasion - I never leave empty handed. The staff is so friendly and helpful, and here's a tip. WHBM sends out 20% coupons for a purchase of $150. Keep that in mind :)

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
