Stuff to do this weekend

EMPAC.jpg

Holy holograms Batman, EMPAC opens today!

It's Friday again. Made your weekend plans yet? Maybe we can help.

Here's what we've been thinking about. Let us know if you have any other ideas.

EMPAC fever
After four years of construction and $200 million RPI's Experimental Media and Performing Arts Center is finally opening tonight. If you want to see what all the fuss is about, all the events this weekend are free. From today through Sunday they'll hold concerts, movies, lectures, exhibits, holographic dance demonstrations (really) and a late night Madlib show on Saturday. You have to call ahead to get tickets. If they say they're sold out for something you realllllly want to see, you might want to show up just in case. Free tickets can sometimes produce a few no-shows. 276-3921

Chamber Music, plugged in
Mix classical music with jazz, folk and rock and you've got Margan and the Red Lions. Still don't know what that sounds like? The band will be at the Massry Center for the Arts at The College of Saint Rose on Sunday at 7:30. They're playing chamber music, with a modern twist. It'll also give you a chance to check out another cool new performance space.

Ain't nothin' but the blues
Good blues has a way of entertaining you, getting inside your soul, and making you realize your own life doesn't suck as much as you thought it did. Revolution Hall is kicking off the weekend with an early blues show (6:30 tonight) by "one of the last bluesmen taught by the great masters," Doug MacLeod. $15

1st Friday
Kick off October in downtown Albany with music, art exhibits and a banned books reading at the Lark Tavern. Afterward you can check out the Capital Swing Dance party at the Albany Elks Lodge on S. Allen. Beginner lessons at 7, Advanced lessons at 8. The party starts at 8:45. $15 ($12 for students and seniors).

Sundance on the Hudson
The Woodstock Film Festival is underway. There are premieres, parties, discussions, short films, documentaries and features all weekend long. Better than Sundance cause you don't have to worry about be recognized.

Free movie
The NY State Writer's Institute Film Series continues with the British Film "Night and the City". It's a 1950's murder mystery by blacklisted American director Jules Dassin. What's it about? "A luckless American expatriate who attempts to establish himself as a wrestling promoter in London [who] quickly finds himself trapped in a nightmare world of crime and murder. Page Hall- UAlbany.

Apple Festival
The Altamont Fairgrounds will be busy again this weekend with 125 crafters, musicians and lots of kid stuff. Sat 10 AM-6 PM, Sun 10 AM-5 PM. $10 for big kids, kids under 12 free. 861-6515 or altamontorchards.com.

Pick an apple
Then turn it into a cobbler or a pie. Or, you know, just eat it the regular way. Here's where you can pick your own.

Star Gazing
EMPAC isn't the only cool place at RPI. If the sky clears up in time, RPI's Hirsch Observatory is open to the public for star gazing tonight (and every Friday through mid November) from 8 to 10 PM. On-site telescopes range from 90 mm - 16". If the weather doesn't cooperate, they'll have an astronomy program in the Science Center.

The "World's Largest Garage Sale" is this weekend in the village of Warrensburgh (just North of Lake George).

I've gone many times - there are a lot of dealers in the village but we really enjoy all of the private garage sales held around the area that capitalize on the large crowds. It's free of course.

I recommend getting off the Northway in the village of Lake George and driving North on route 9, stopping wherever you want along the way for sales. When you get close to the Warrensburg N'Way exit, park just south of it right on route 9 (a bit of a walk but a quick getaway by car - just proceed North and get right on 87 there instead of driving the village or turning south).

Happy Bargain Hunting!

Discard Avant Garb is this weekend too, at Capital Rep. It's Sunday but I'm not sure if any tickets are left or not. After party follows at the Lark Tavern.

And EMPAC is definitely worth the visit. It's pretty "doggone" cool, to paraphrase a v.p. candidate.

Also Oktoberfest at Hunter Mountain.

I heard there is a charity event at the Italian American Community Center in Troy on Sunday from 12-3. The Empty Bowls dinner... for 10 dollars you get soup, bread, dessert a drink and a homemade pottery bowl.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
