The Saratoga Springs Public Library has a sort of amnesty program going on right now. Until November 15, you can pay off your late fees with a donated "unopened, unexpired, non-perishable food item." One food item per overdue library item. (You can't get out of paying for lost items this way, though.)

This is great, I participated in this a couple of years back, I think I had to bring in about $20 worth of canned food to get rid of all my fines.
