Free cab rides
Law firm Martin, Harding and Mazzotti is offering free cab rides Wednesday through Sunday this week -- you know, just in case you're a little too enthusiastic in giving thanks. Rides will provided with "no charge, no obligation and no questions will be asked." The number is 1-800-LAW-1010 (and now we have the "heavy hitters" jingle stuck in our head).

I always have a problem using these cabs. They never come.
Actually, I have that problem with most cabs in Albany. I call, say I'm on whatever street, and they just flat out say no. It's not a bad section of town, but three calls to three different cab companies late at night? How do people normally get home?

No no, you're doing it all wrong. You're supposed to stab someone, then you get the nice blue and white cab with all the extra lights to come get you. You don't get home right away, but at least it's warm.

@Lola: I hear you. I've tried to take a cab in this area twice.
The first time was to the airport at 5am. The first company responded with "Are you serious?" and hung up. A second one agreed to come, we gave our address, and they never showed. We drove ourselves to the airport after waiting 20 minutes past their scheduled arrival time and barely made our flight.
The second time was after a night out with friends. The cab didn't show up after a half hour (despite saying it would be ten minutes) so some friends took pity on us and drove us home.
I have a theory that taxi companies don't actually exist — there are just a lot of drivers that like traveling around in funny-colored cars.

From what I read here it seems to depend on your location, but for what it's worth I've used Yellow Cabs 3 times a week for about 2 months in a row in summer 07, in and out Center Square, and had no problems. If I really need to get one late at night (say, to spend some quality time at the airport), I would schedule and call ahead during work-hours.
Thank you, Captain Obvious.

In my experience with cabs around here, you can only get a ride if you tell them that you are going to a suburb. I have tried getting a ride from Downtown to Uptown plenty of times and have been denied almost always. My friends from Latham, etc. have no problem getting a cab. Horrible.

I guess I'm totally in the minority because I have never had a problem with cabs in Albany - and I've taken tons of them.
I've called them from the bar to take me home, I've called them to bring from the mechanic's to my office, I've taken them home from work in bad weather when I didn't feel like braving the roads myself and I've taken them to weddings so no one was stuck being the DD. I've even hailed cabs here before.
Maybe I'm just more charming on the phone?
On the other hand, I HAVE had long waits when it comes to the free cabs, but I think that's understandable considering they're, you know, free.

A few years ago on New Year's Eve we called from midtown, the Drunk Bus. It was 12:30 a.m. They said it would be four hours. Fine, it was free bus, and it was booked.
Then we started calling cabs. They all said similar things.
We ended up going outside for a cigarette and stopping a cab that was just dropping some folks off.
