Express
Albany didn't make it onto this hypothetical high-speed train map of the US. So we did the math (using the map's assumptions) ourselves: a high speed train between Albany and NYC could make the trip in just under one hour. Albany to Boston: 1 hour 8 minutes. Alas, such a high speed route is probably way, way off (if ever.) Not even a proposed express run of the regular train from Rensselaer to NYC can make it onto the tracks.

(1.) The map of the U.S. looks a little off.
(2.) Why would anyone build a NYC-Rochester route and bypass Albany? This just doesn't make any sense. Look at the terrain that they would have to build through. A rail line to Rochester would have to negotiate the Catskills as well as the Finger Lakes, whereas a high speed connection over the existing Hudson River corridor from NYC-Albany is very much feasible.

You're right, Cato; I thought the same thing. That's just a totally hypothetical map, though; they also have straight-shot routes from Denver-SLC, SLC-Sacramento, and Las Vegas-Albuquerque on there, too. If you think building across the Catskills would be tough, it'd be a piece of cake compared to an "as the crow flies" route across the Rockies!
