Icy, Snowy Apocalypse Watch

snowy apocalypse meter 2008-12-18

Yes, a "winter weather event" will soon be upon us. Here's the (paraphrased) forecast from the National Weather Service, which has issued a winter storm warning for tomorrow:

Tonight
Eh. Not too cold.

Tomorrow
Snow could start in the morning, and very likely will pick up in the afternoon with accumulations of up to 8 inches.

Tomorrow night
More snow with temps in the teens. Total accumulation could be as much as 12 inches.

Saturday
Cold, highs in the 20s, but probably no snow.

Sunday
Warming up a bit (30s), but a good chance of snow again.

We're going to project this as a "Winter's Making an Effort" storm as this looks like it'll be the first significant snow accumulation of the year. Shoveling will almost certainly be involved. If you can plan to knock off work a little early tomorrow, that might not be a bad idea.

But, hey, it's looking like there will be little, if any, ice. Here's to keeping the lights on.

Note: AOA has absolutely no weather forecasting expertise. At all. We do, however, think it's funny how every winter storm is treated like the end of the world.

This is very exciting!! Last week, we thought these storm warnings were a joke, and we ended up losing our power for four days. This time I'm going to be wise and turn my power off before the storm so I don't lose it. See, I'm always thinking.

I think that's the wrong way to do it, Barold. I'm going to be using as much power as I can tomorrow so I can make sure I have extra in case I lose it, then I can just ride it out.

So what you're telling me is that I should probably cancel the grand opening of my entrepreneurial snow cone stand tomorrow night? Great. Juuuuust great.

@B: Hey, this is not as dumb as you think!
OK, wait, no.

BTW, generators start at around $300, you can get a decent one for $700. If you have a few computers, you might need a line-conditioner on top of that. Of course, don't go all-Darwin and leave them out of the garage.

Last week you said that awful ice storm would be "mildly annoying", so should we expect this one to really be "Hell freezing over"?

Really though, the two should be swapped. Snow is mildly annoying because you just shovel it aside and get on with things. Ice sticks around, knocks out trees and power lines, makes driving dangerous, and just plain pisses in everyone's Cheerios.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
