Stuff to do this weekend

rpi_puckman.jpg

Puckman is sure to make an appearance at RPI this weekend.

Yeah, we're thinking blankets, hot chocolate and 30 Rock DVDs, but if you're looking to get out of the house this weekend, yes, there are options. Here are a few we've found. What else ya got?

Swing,swing,swing
If you like to dance, head over to RPI's Academy Hall this weekend for the Smorgasbord of Swing. It's a whole weekend of music and dancing with workshops in Swing, Lindy, Blues and Charleston by experts from around the country. Music from Reggie's Red Hot Feetwarmers and the Gordon Webster Quartet. Workshops in swing, lindy, blues and Charleston.

Wander Schenectady in sub zero temperatures
It's Art Night in Schenectady tonight. Unfortunately for the Art Night folks, it's also the coldest night of the winter thus far. But hey, we're hearty northeast stock, and there's plenty to do indoors. You can always thaw out with a chocolate pizza at Aperitivo.

Oscar prep
The Oscars are coming. Be ready. Capital Region theaters are showing most of the potentials. Best deal of the weekend: Synecdoche at Saratoga Film Forum. $6

Owl Prowl
Wear your long johns for this one. The folks at the Albany Pine Bush Discovery Center are hosting a night hike to learn about the mating habits of owls. No, really. The one hour hike starts at 6:30 at 195 New Karner Road, Albany. Bring a flashlight. $2 per person, $5 per family. 456-0655 or albanypinebush.org.

RPI Hockey
The RPI Engineers are at home tonight and tomorrow. Before you go, be sure to review the rules of etiquette for spectators. Say hi to Puckman--and for God's sake, leave your Clarkson jersey at home.

Rising Stars
Saturday night at The Palace the Albany Symphony Orchestra turns the spotlight on three local prodigies. 15 year old pianist Sijing Ye, 15 year old violinist William Hagen tap dancer Ryan VanDenBoom. 7:30. $25-$49

God Builds Like Frank Lloyd Wright
Filmmaker-animator Brent Green will be at EMPAC tonight showing some of his films with live music. Green is famous for his darkly humorous stop-motion animated films and shorts. 8pm. $5-$15.

I Am My Own Wife
Home Made Theater's Shuster play reading series continues on Sunday night with "I Am My Own Wife". Sunday afternoon at 3. Free.

Make 'em laugh
Let out your inner comedian, or watch someone elses at the Lark Tavern's comedy open mic night on Sunday.

Consume warm things
Like soup and hot chocolate.

I'm totally seeing "Jacques Brel is Alive and Well and Living in Paris" at Schenectady Light Opera Company tonight. You betcha.

Oooh ... and the critically acclaimed Darren Aronofsky/Mickey Rourke film "the Wrestler" opens today.

I'm headed to Revolution Hall in Troy for Goodship's "New Year's Resolutions #1: DANCE" at 8:30p to whenever. These TNO afterparty guys know how to warm people up.

For those who want to stay inside today, there's a Battlestar Galactica marathon with the first of season 4.5 tonight!

EMPAC has got Brent Green showing animations with live music by Brendan Canty (Fugazi), Howe Gelb (Giant Sand) and Jim Becker (Califone) tonight (Friday) at 8 pm. More info here: http://www.empac.rpi.edu/events/2009/spring/green/

The EMPAC show was fantastic. Very intense live performance over Brent Green's dark stop-motion animations, punctuated by songs performed by Howe Gelb. A lot of people seem bitter about the amount of money poured in the EMPAC, but it is definitely bringing interesting shows to the Capital District.

Good beats at the Revolution Hall, slow turnaround on this frigid night, I took a few shots, here:

Ooops...I meant to say Schenectady native Mickey Rourke's new Darren Aronofsky-directed film, "The Wrestler," is opening. Yep. He's from the Electric City.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
