Icy, Snowy Apocalypse Watch

snowy apocalypse 2009-01-27

Updated Tuesday at 10:30 pm: Some of the forecasts now projecting ice and freezing rain Wednesday afternoon. The storm has already glazed over things in parts of the South and Midwest. Ugh.

Updated Tuesday at 7:30 pm: The City of Albany has declared a preemptive snow emergency starting at 8 pm on Wednesday. Surely the apocalypse is now upon us.

Just when you thought you might finally catch a glimpse of the driveway or -- gasp, some grass -- it's time for another Icy, Snowy Apocalypse. Here are the (paraphrased) details from the National Weather Service:

Today
OK. Cold, but maybe some sun.

Tonight
Again, OK. There may be a few flakes in the evening. The snow shouldn't get cranked up until after midnight. Overnight accumulations of 2-4 inches.

Wednesday morning
Continuous snow of the "additional heavy accumulation" variety.

Wednesday afternoon
A conveyor belt of precipitation stretching from Texas to the Northeast continues to dump snow on us. Some reports indicate we could get up to 10 inches by the time it's over.

Wednesday night
Snow should slow.

Rest of the week
Winter continues.

It looks like the key to this storm will be how fast the smear of snow moves through the area. Faster is better in this case. The upside? It doesn't look like ice or freezing rain should be a problem.

Because it's looking this one could approach a foot of accumulation, we're going to project this as a "winter is making an effort" on the Icy, Snowy Apocalypse meter.

Note: AOA has absolutely no weather forecasting expertise. At all. We do, however, think it's funny how every winter storm is treated like the end of the world.

Winter storm?

No, SUPER BOWL!!!

I smell a snow day!

Snow day for 10" of snow? That's just enough to make the 3 mile uphill walk to/from school a bit chilly.

It's nice to see the weather forecast laid out in this format. The weather websites are good for temperatures and "yes, it should rain/snow" or "no, it shouldn't rain/snow" but they never tell you in a useful way what's going to happen.

Definitely not going to be the icy, snowy end of the world, but hopefully will be enough to justify the gallon of cocoa I'll be drinking tomorrow.

As long as Jim Cantore isn't parked at Pearl & State we should survive.

@bb: I've thought for a while now that Jim Cantore's super on the Weather Channel should read:

Jim Cantore
weather commando

Well The Sage Colleges just sent out a notice that it will be closed tomorrow. I'm not sure I understand the whole "closing before we even see a snowflake" thing but whatever works for them. I work for a place that likes us to prove our commitment to them by making us come to work just so they can say we get to go home early. It's okay though, I have my helmet and padded body suite ready to wear on the drive in tomorrow.

I'm having this storm right now in southern Illinois near St. Louis. It's only enough snow to make Ichabod Crane close, but the roads haven't been plowed. Please post a picture of a NY DOT snow plow (or three in tandem, going down Central Ave.) so I can send it to the IL DOT and suggest that they buy one! (I'm formerly of Colonie.)

Oh Ichabod Crane....When don't they close?

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
