NY Presidents Pop Quiz #2

Cleveland cutoutIn honor of Presidents Day, AOA has decided to slack off today. A little bit. But only because we're honoring the presidents. And with that in mind, we've put together a little presidential pop quiz -- we'll be posting one question for each of the six presidents from New York today.

Question: Which New York president hanged two men and had a reputation has an honest -- and very average -- man? He also holds a special place in the lineup of presidents.

The answer's after the jump.

Grover ClevelandAnswer: Grover Cleveland

Cleveland, the nation's 22nd and 24th president, is the only person to be elected to the office in two non-consecutive terms.

As the sheriff of Erie County, he personally hanged two men. He could have had a deputy do it for $10, but chose to handle the task himself.

Cleveland gained the reputation as an honest, upstanding man as mayor of Buffalo -- he fought with the city's political machine to reform the government there. Even after a career as a political reformer and two-time president, a biographer wrote of Cleveland: "in Grover Cleveland the greatness lies in typical rather than unusual qualities."
