The most bang for your enlightenment buck

dalai lama vs phish

Neither is a cheap ticket.

In the next few months the Capital Region will host two events that are sure to draw thousands of faithful in search of an enlightening experience. On April 19 the Dalai Lama will be at the TU Center. And on August 16 Phish will play SPAC.

Tickets to both events are pretty pricey. So, in an attempt to figure out which event will make the most of your enlightenment dollar, we've decided to compare the two head-to-head.*

So, Phish takes a very narrow victory (His Holiness probably had no desire to win, anyway). Tickets go on sale March 27 (there are limited advance sales). Tickets for the Dalai Lama's visit are already on sale.

*Yes, this is obviously a joke (and probably not a good one).

I'm glad to see my "Morning Blend" comment went to good use ;-)

As for the famous followers... I don't think Tom Hanks is actually a fan. There was a rumor he was at the MSG reunion back in '02, but it was just a joke (because of the Phish song "Wilson" and Tom Hanks' Survivor "Wilson" volleyball) I've also never heard of Tiger Woods being a fan...

The real famous followers are... Fred Savage, Pete from Pete and Pete, Danny Devito (he was at Coventry), Jeremy Shockey, Conan O'Brien, and... that's all I can think of off the top of my head.

Oops, make that Cast Away "Wilson" volleyball... I guess I have Survivor on the brain?

Come on guys, you can't pass on the NXIVM "issue" here...

You forgot to add in the TOKEn value...

Hahahaha...

Am I the only one who finds the Dalai Lama's pronouncements a tad banal?

I'm pretty sure Carrot Top is a phan as well.

The crowd--
DL: Corporate liberal cultists with too many bumper stickers
Phish: children of corporate liberal cultists (also with too many bumber stickers); now with their own young children.
Winner: Goo Balls

My problem with supporting Phish, is you end up supporting their bass player, Mike Gordon.

If you remember back before their 'hiatus', Mike got caught going off privately with a 9 year old girl at a "The Dead" performance at Jones Beach.

He's lucky to be alive -- given that the girl was the daughter of some local Angels down there -- and some suggest the reason they HAD TO go off-the-road was as punishment for that. Which is nice. If I was Trey, I woulda let the Hells Angels kill Mike Gordon, and gotten another bass player.

So to sum up. There NO REASON any adult should be going off privately with a 9 year old girl at a rock concert -- and I'm not going to give my money to any band which keeps someone like that on the payroll.

Mike... he was found innocent after talking to the child and other people that were around, and I'm sure after looking at the pictures he was taking that night.

Sure, it was stupid to go off alone this day and age. But to be branded a sex offender because of it? Ridiculous.

He's an eccentric guy, just look at his photography page: http://www.mike-gordon.com/multimedia/snapshots.html But he's no sex offender.

Do some more research before you continue spreading lies.

Here's some more info for you, Mike:

Phish Bassist Gordon Cleared

Following the incident, a joint statement credited to Gordon and the girl's family was released by Phish's label, Elektra Records. It read, "We have had several discussions regarding the situation that occurred at Jones Beach. It is now clear to all involved that this was an unfortunate misunderstanding, and we look forward to putting this matter behind us."

Thanks for clearing that up, Matt. The sex-offender thing has been a nasty smear for some time, but you know, haters gotta hate. I've always wondered why Phish has garnered such vitriol.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
