My Exit Tim McDonough
Every Monday night our friends at WEXT do this thing called My Exit -- local listeners get to come into the station and program an hour of music. So we thought it'd be fun to find out a little bit about these people and why they picked the songs on their playlist. Here's tonight's person:
Who:
Tim McDonough ~ Library Director, Niskayuna
Musical Taste:
Over the years I've harbored crushes on everything from Cape Breton fiddle tunes to dub reggae, but in the end the music needs to have authenticity or soul to make a lasting impression. The love finding great new music to explore and share.
Five Songs from Tim's show:
The Reducers featuring Mark Mulcahy - " My Problem."
These guys have been making no nonsense pub rock for more than 30 years and are one of the best examples of staying true to themselves and their influences I know. This is from their latest and possibly best album, Guitar Bass & Drums.
Frightened Rabbit - "Old Old Fashioned"
I discovered this group by reading one of the many great Mp3 blogs that have sprung up in the last few years. They hail from Scotland and feature two brothers Grant & Scott Hutchison. This comes from their latest album Midnight Organ Fight.
Mark Erelli - "Volunteers"
Mark hails from Western Massachusetts and has released several terrific albums on the Signature Sounds label. This song represents to me a stellar example of the story songs that are being written by songwriters like Mark as they try to make sense of our post 9/11 world. This one will haunt you.
Kasey Chambers & Shane Nicholson - "Wildflower"
I've been a fan of Kasey Chambers from her first release and this project, with her husband Shane Nicholson, has her returning to her acoustic roots after an album of more straightforward rock songs. This selection shows off the chemistry these two obviously have and their love of great melodies and songcraft.
Slim Whitman - "Danny Boy"
I recorded my session just prior to St. Patrick's Day, so this song seemed a logical choice at the time, less so now but those of us who remember those TV commercials touting Slim Whitman as the man "who sold more records than the Beatles", may get a kick out of hearing his "countrypolitan" take on the Irish standard.
You can hear Tim's My Exit show tonight at 8 at 97.7 or at ext977.org. Here's how to schedule your own My Exit show on WEXT
Say Something!
We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
Comments
Slim Whitman's commercial never said he sold more albums than Elvis and the Beatles. It said he had the Number One song longer in England.Which is in the Guiness book of world records.
