The pigs can keep their blood thinners
RPI biochemist Robert Linhardt was named to this year's Scientific America 10. Linhardt -- who's an expert on the blood-thinning molecule heparin -- got tagged for his recent work investigating a contaminated batch of the drug from China. But why stop after you've helped uncover an international conspiracy? Linhardt's team decided they should also figure out how to head off the problem in the future by using bacteria to produce the drug (it's usually derived from... pig intestines).
