Something's missing here

If ever a New York State program could be described as kafkaesque, the Self Employment Assistance Program might be it. An unemployed journalist looking to enroll in it was recently directed to... a hole in the ground.

Just to add insult to injury, if you happen to be unemployed and decide to start a business (because there are just no other options, for instance), you will end your eligibility for unemployment, even if you haven't made dime one. So if you do the responsible thing and prepare yourself for a time when you might be more self-sufficient, you will be determined ineligible to receive unemployment insurance benefits that, after all, you paid for. If you just sit around, you can continue to collect (for as long as they keep extending the benefits).

That was equal parts hilarious and depressing.

And for gosh sake, don't tell them you do volunteer work for which other people get paid! Especially if the pay is less than the unemployment checks would be.

That's actually how i picture every branch of NYS government operates. Depressingly unsurprising. Go taxes!
