Quirk of New York State law: when the governor is "absent from the state," the next-in-line to the governorship becomes acting governor. With control of the state Senate currently contested -- and thus, succession to the governorship unclear -- David Paterson says he'll be staying in the state. As if things weren't enough of a mess already. This is devastating for both the same-sex marriage legislation and the Reproductive Health Act.

I miss Albany and NYS government! It's primal and real. The hidden hero here is Shelly Silver (yep - read that again). He has the worst public relations operations in the world, but cares about governing and government.
