A challenger for Gillibrand

Reps for Carolyn Maloney say the congresswoman will "definitely" take on Kirsten Gillibrand next year in the Democratic primary for US Senate. [Daily Politics]

I like Kirsten Gillibrand, but am not sure I want a senator who says "wanna" instead of "want to" and regularly refers to a group as "you guys". Talking to the populace at their level is one thing, but sounding like a teenager is another.

"As a senior member of the House Financial Services Committee (and immediate past chair of its Financial Institutions and Consumer Credit Subcommittee), she has worked to modernize financial services laws and regulations, strengthen consumer protections, and institute more vigilant oversight of the safety and soundness of our nation’s banking industry. Also a senior member of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, Maloney legislation has saved hundreds of millions in taxpayer dollars." - Excerpt from the Congresswoman's House webpage.

Right, just what New York needs, the person who was responsible for the "oversight" which led to the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Thanks, but no thanks. I'll stick with Kristen.

Actually, Carolyn Maloney used the phrase "you guys" just last week in a press conference. But, in any event, should this be the standard by which to choose a US Senator? Kirsten Gillibrand is doing an amazing job: fighting for a public option to the health care reform bill, bringing home millions in economic recovery monies, and traveling the state constantly to meet and talk with New Yorkers about their concerns. The smart thing to do is to keep them both in Congress: Maloney in the House, and Gillibrand in the Senate. Gillibrand shows promise of becoming an outstanding US Senator for New York - part of a new generation of independent, forward-looking leaders.

Kirsten will win in 2010 and 2012 because, like her predessor Hillary Clinton, the more voters meet Gillibrand, the more they like her and the greater her support. The same has never been said of Maloney.

"I like Kirsten Gillibrand, but am not sure I want a senator who says "wanna" instead of "want to ..."

Speaking as a news editor, sometimes that's the way print media reporters transcribe their notes. When somebody speaks fast, "want to" can easily come across as "wanna."

Some reporters make the correction and others do not. I think they should, because spoken English differs from written English and what appears in print to be slovenly speech is actually quite acceptable when spoken.

I live in the 20th District, and we are big supporters of Gillibrand here, because she was an exceptional representative. She has an unflagging work ethic, sincere constituent outreach, and independent and insightful analysis of policy. New to this role, I am really offended that her colleague chooses to distort Kirsten's record and attack her personally in order to gain the Senate seat that she wanted. Maloney has seniority in the House, and should use that collaborate with Gillibrand for the good of NY in these stressful economic times.

I'm happy Maloney is running in the primary because I think voters should get choices, whether I end up voting for her or Gillibrand. Obama should not lean on candidates to drop out. And as a liberal, I'm not all that thrilled with the whole Blue Dog Democrat bit so I'll be comparing Gillibrand and Mahoney on various issues.

I HEARD Kirsten using "wanna" and "you guys" during press conferences - not a text version of her talk.

And I do think the way a senator speaks says alot about his or her communication skills. What's next, "ain't got none"?

I miss Pantaloons and her sense of humor.

Barold, word on the street is that Pantaloons thinks you're pretty funny & still visits the site pretty regularly. ;-)
