Hanging up the hat

Among the exodus at the TU: Dan Higgins, AKA "The Advocate." We're sad to see him -- and this feature -- go. It seems like he was able to help a bunch of people. And a little bit of crusading by the media for a better, fairer world isn't a bad thing.

Yet it is ok to have two or three horse racing journalists. Hi, its the 21st century. There is no need to cover horse racing on a daily basis.

Also, I read that Alan Wechsler, the outdoors columnist, was let go. I posted a comment on his latest TU blog entry wishing him luck, but apparently it was not "approved." Alan was the only local columnist or writer that I know of who covers the outdoors (beyond fishing or hunting).

Alan's exit is a true shame -- his blog and articles were always interesting and well-written. As a recreational cyclist/runner/hiker, I hope that the TU will in some way continue to cover outdoor adventures in our beautiful region.

I'm sure the TU will be able to lift something from the NYT or the AP wire to fill the void, just like they do with 90% of their other articles and columns. Or maybe they'll take a picture of Fred LeBrun in the hat and a trench coat, and have him write a third column.

hey comment #1, you stole my initials!

Dan was an advocate not just for readers but also for his colleagues. He volunteered to be laid off -- which means that he probably saved someone else's job.

Rob, I'm not positive, but I'm guessing that Alan lost access to his blog when he was laid off and no one else is approving any comments he got after the fact.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
