Shopping the farmers' markets

farmers market report logoOne of the best things about weekends in the Capital Region is shopping the farmers' markets.

This week fruit, flowers, onions corn and all kinds of other seasonal goodness.

Here's more info on what to expect at local markets.

SATURDAY MARKETS

Troy Farmers' Market

Riverfront Park (map)
Saturdays 9AM - 1PM

In season now:
Sour cherries , raspberries , new potatoes , strawberries , fresh garlic , garlic scapes , a full selection of cooking and salad greens , squash , herbs.

Other fun stuff:
Prepared food from Thunder Mountain Curry.
Music from Hill Hollow Band
Cooking demonstration from chef Larry of Tosca Grill including chilled peach soup and New Orleans organic chicken and andouille sausage.
RCHS walking tour of Troy from 10:30-11:30 starts at the market.


Saratoga Farmers' Market

Saturday 9AM - 1PM
Also Wednesday from 3-6

In season now:
Summer squashes coming in too. We will have broccoli, green peppers, tomatoes, summer squash, zucchini, potatoes, beets, radishes, fennel, all kinds of greens, mushrooms, sprouts.

Also Expect:
Jams, baked goods and cheeses


Albany Farmers Market
Saturday from 9AM- 1PM
339 Central Avenue, Albany
Linda Norris Auditorium Lot (map)

In season now:

Parson's Vegetable Farm has edible pea pods and beautiful fresh-cut flowers
Barber Farms has brand-new tender zucchini and summer squash--great for grilling.

Also expect:

Fresh-baked loaves of bread, biscotti, and delectable scones from Rock Hill Bakehouse

For the barbecue: whole chickens from Garden of Spices or Angus burgers from Ledge Rock Farms.


SUNDAY MARKETS:


Schenectady Greenmarket

Fresh this week:

New to the market: many varieties of onion including bunched sweet candy onions and retropea onions.

Fruits: cherries, apricots, peaches, pluots, raspberries, strawberries, sweet cherries

Veggies: beets (including bulls blood red), beet greens, broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, cabbage, corn, slicing and pickling cucumbers, fennel, garlic, garlic scapes (including German white), green beans, green onions (including purple), tomatoes (hydroponic and sun gold), peas, radishes, red new potatoes, salad turnips, purple-top turnips, yellow squash, zucchini, patty pan squash

Greens: Swiss chard, kale, many varieties of salad mixes, braising greens, lettuces (buttercrunch, red and green leaf, bib, butter, oak, romaine and mixed heads that combine all of these), Boston lettuce, endive, escarole, spinach

Herbs: sweet basil, lemon basil, sweet Thai basil, Lime basil, Greek globe basil, dill, cilantro, Italian large leaf parsley, mints, oregano, thyme, and more

Greens: Swiss chard (rainbox and more), kale, many varieties of salad mixes, braising greens, lettuces (buttercrunch, red and green leaf, bib, butter, oak, romaine and some mixed heads that combine all of these!), Boston lettuce, Endive, Escarole, spinach

Herbs: sweet basil, lemon basil, sweet Thai basil, Lime basil, Greek globe basil, dill, cilantro, Italian large leaf parsley, mints, oregano, thyme, arugula and more

Also Expect:

NEW--Sororia Organics Soap will have new soaps, body butters and gentle exfoliating facial cleansing powder. The powder is made with organic lavender and pink rose powder and contains jojoba beads.

NEW--Cooper's Ark Farm will have boneless, skinless chicken breasts, legs and thighs, livers, etc.

NEW--In addition to their flash-frozen vegetable and chicken pot pies, The Red Barn will have lobster pot pies--one pound of lobster in gravy with peas, celery, potatoes and carrots! This is in addition to their hot dogs, chili dogs, sausage with onions and peppers, fruit on a stick and amazing house made potato chips

Painted Goat Farm will feature strawberries and cream--creamy chevre with fresh, home made, organic strawberry preserves--for a limited time.
