HSM in the park

The Park Playhouse (in Albany's Washington Park) opens its season tonight (the web site plays music that won't stop). This year's show: High School Musical. Tickets up front are $12. The rest are free (first come, first serve).

>>This year's show: High School Musical

why?
:(

Nothing says "recession" like the schlock theatres put on. It's all about the money- not what's really interesting.

Forget everything I said about parking above Lark being relatively stress free... if you're not in by 7:00 then you're screwed till 11:00 while the masses consume their Mouse-approved "culture."

I'm surprised by the cynicism about this! I too was skeptical, but I meandered into the Playhouse last night and saw an extremely respectful and diverse crow enjoying a beautiful summer night performance in Albany. Yeah, it's not Shakespeare, but it's something different (and safe) bringing families and kids together from all across the region...a good "draw" which adds a sense of vibrancy to the Park/Center Square area.

I always love the shows that Washington Park puts on. I agree that High School Musical seems like a dubious choice, but I will likely go, anyway. It's an evening out that can include your kids, it's fun, entertaining and time spent outside (and FREE)! What more could you want?

Meh. This is the first summer in many years that I have no desire to see the show. I agree that it's a great choice for families, but my kids are too old for it. Also for Seussical the Musical done by the junior group. Oh well, maybe next year.

I actually think it's a good choice. Let's face it: the real star of the show is summer itself. It's a great place to bring the family, but I dare anyone to try keeping kids awake during Camelot. As for the cynics, if it turns you off, just don't go.

Alright alright! You are all correct about how this show will bring in audiences a different show wouldn't and it is free family fun and will give warm fuzzies. I totally agree. (Full disclosure- I watched the whole movie and loved it.) I guess I'm projecting my dissatisfaction at the overall lack of theatre performances in the area that appeal to my demographic and my need for plays that challenge the audience. Plays in the Park will never be that place. And that's okay.

Actually, my kids really enjoyed Camelot and all of the other shows. In fact, they prefer the ones they haven't seen movies of, because you go in with a certain expectation and the live show is never quite the same. For that reason, they weren't as thrilled when Park Playhouse did Grease or West Side Story. But they enjoyed Bye Bye Birdie, George M., and Gypsy a lot more. I'm not being a cynic. I'm just sayin'.

Lights in the Park in winter, Park Playhouse plays in the summer. Above Lark parking is not much better, but at least I'll always have New Scotland. I think everyone must be too afraid of the homeless in the area to park there.

Say Something!
