Albany police chief out

james tuffey apdAlbany police chief James Tuffey is retiring. His last official day will be Saturday.

The statement announcing his retirement doesn't mention why he's leaving. Tuffey's been under fire recently for a string of problems. Among them: lapsed certification as a police officer (for which he went on leave), the ghost ticket situation and, most recently, a racially-insensitive remark he's accused of making about the Richard Bailey case.

Tuffey's leadership of the department has been an issue in the mayoral contest. Corey Ellis, who's challenging mayor Jerry Jennings in the Democratic primary, has been critical of the way Tuffey has deployed (or not deployed) officers in neighborhoods. And in June -- during the controversy over Tuffey's lapsed police officer certification -- Ellis called for Tuffey to be fired.

Sp---? What a sh*thead. Good Riddance.

Oh well, good riddance.

...and the killer(s) are currently walking unmolested throughout your neighborhood. Sometimes I wonder about the current state of our society...

When the going gets Tuffey, the Tuffey gets going.

What an arse! Is it that hard to find a suitable person to run the APD?

So he's retiring from a chief position. I bet he has a fat retirement bonus coming. They should have fired him. Or perhaps, collect all the fines from those bulls-eye ticket and use that for this retirement bonus instead.

does anybody know how many albany chiefs have had to retire in shame? it's got to be at least three.

I'm surprised that Tuffey resinged over THIS. The guy is part of a machine gun cover-up, the Bulls-eye fiasco, he sat on his hands during multiple drunk driving accidents of his officers, oops! he's not a cop, and was whisked away on private jets to Siena games by developers seeking special favors from traffic safety (which he oversaw) - he was never even slapped on the hand - and yet, the buffon is dumb enough to use a racial slur where folks can hear it.

Tuffey should have been fired long ago. Perhaps he saw his chance to get a pension and took it. I'll bet that "let's move forward" Jerry saw the liability of the officer's union unhappy (close to endorsing Morris) and Tuffey's language losing votes in black wards, and told Tuffey he better take the money and run. Rumor had it Tuffey was being groomed to be the next mayor. Will it be Riccutti if JJ retires in 2 years?

A total F**k up typical of this administration. Scandal after scandal. Hey Albanians, if this were pro sports, and your team kept losing year after year, we the owners would fire the coach. The ship is sinking, folks. The ship is sinking.

@anonny_mouse: Welcome to Albany politics. You should have been here when Erastus Corning was Mayor.

In Albany, as in Chicago, whomever the Machine wants to win, wins.
