Root, root, root for... who?

reds capThe Record had published an interview today with Jennifer Crespo, the owner of a Cap City -- a hat shop in Troy. A fact at the end of the interview caught our attention:

Q: What is the best seller at the store?
A: The Cincinnati Reds hats and the Yankees hats...

Huh? We totally understand the Yankees -- this area is full of their fans. And according to this chart of best sellers from baseball cap giant New Era (via NYT), the Yankees are the best-selling hat in the country.

But the Reds? They're not even in the top five on that list. And the team is bad (as, sadly, they have been for some time).

So, what's up? Does Troy harbor a bunch of Pete Rose sympathizers? Or perhaps the caps' popularity has nothing to do with baseball...

Crips! I bet they don't buy them in red though, that would be Troy gang faux pas.

It's a gang sign. Colors are very important and is very indicative a very unpublicized problem in this area.

Cincinnati's popularity has also upticked quite a bit since some rapper (Nelly?) wore a Reds cap in a music video some years back.

As a transplant from the great city of Cincinnati, I feel totally qualified to speak on behalf of her 300,000+ citizens and countless Reds fans. The Cincinnati Reds are the first professional team in major league baseball and once upon a time they were the best. I'm sure of it.... my dad and all the guys back home tell me that's so....

Yeah, Cincinnati has no idea why you all want to wear our team's merch.
