Public voices concerns about Troy crime, questions about Paterson's budget cutting plan, supervisor race includes accusations of illiteracy, high demand for flu vaccine
More than a hundred people showed up last night at Troy City Hall for the public forum about a recent streak of crime in the city. Both mayor Harry Tutunjian and police chief Nicholas Kaiser stressed that crime is down for the year. Saratoga Springs police say they're investigating a report from a Skidmore student that she was nearly assaulted by a taxi driver early Saturday morning. The student says she was able to escape when the cab stopped near campus. The SSPD says it hasn't identified the company that owns the cab. [Saratogian] [Fox23] [TU]
Critics of David Paterson's proposed $3 billion in budget cuts say the list includes a bunch of one-time shots and some questionable assumptions. It appears that Democrats in the Assembly are leaning toward along with Paterson's plan. It doesn't look like the state Senate is all that interested, though. [TU] [Daily Politics] [Daily Politics]
Both Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand released statements yesterday calling for state senator Hiram Monserrate to resign. Gillibrand said Monserrate doesn't leave soon, the state Senate should bounce him. The trial of Adrian Thomas, the Troy man accused of causing the death of his infant son, yesterday featured dueling experts on coerced "false confessions" -- both are professors, one from UC-Berkely and the other from the University of Utah. [TU] [Troy Record]
The New York Court of Appeals -- the state's highest court -- will hear the cased between the TU and the City of Albany over whether records regarding machine gun purchases by police officers should be turned over to the paper under FOIL. [TU]
The two candidates running for Guilderland supervisor differ on whether extending the commercial tax base actually leads to more money for the town. [TU]
The Rotterdam supervisors race features an argument over whether one candidate is illiterate or not. [TU]
The parents of Matthew Whalen, the Lansingburgh High School student suspended for having a pocketknife in his car, say they have hired an attorney and will be formally appealing their son's suspension. Colonie police have accused a bookeeper for Adirondack Tire of allegedly embezzling more than $100k from the company. They say she used company checks and credit cards and then altered the books to cover her tracks. [CapNews9] [TU]
Bethlehem police say a man was robbed recently while making a night deposit at the Trustco on Delaware Ave (map). [Fox23]

That cab driver fits the description of a rather creepy one I would have punched if I could have. It was me, another girl and another guy - and he asked for the money up front. Weird - but even weirder - he was trying to discretely take pictures of me and another girl being drunk and inappropriate, not that we were. When I figured out what he was doing I tried to grab his cell phone out of his hand and throw it at him. Instead he had to deal with a few choice words from me.
Needless to say, this is one of many situations of creepy cab drivers in the area - and why I just try to get groups to walk back home after a night of drinking in Albany.
