Stuff to do this weekend

Bourdain

Bad Boy/Chef Anthony Bourdain comes to Schenectady on Sunday.

"So much time and so little to do. Strike that -- reverse it."

Another weekend. Here's your golden ticket. OK, not so much a golden ticket as a list of fun stuff to do. But hey, that's good too.

Did we miss anything? Add it to the list.

And have fun!

Dan Deacon at EMPAC
Update: There's been a lineup change -- see Jason's note.

EMPAC's New Nothing series continues tonight with Dan Deacon, Skeleton$ and Luciano Chessa. More detail here. Tickets are apparently going quickly for this one, so get 'em now. $5 -$15

Also this weekend at EMPAC, viola virtuoso Garth Knox plays an evening of music written expressly viola and viola d'amore, including a world premiere of a new piece. Here's a sample of what he can do. It's pretty cool.

More Music
The Ashley Pond Band is at Valentine'swith Matthew Loiacano on Saturday 9PM.

British Blues Band Savoy Brown plays Revolution Hall tonight at 7. $18 in advance, $20 at the door.

Celtic Rockers The Glengarry Bhoys play Rev. Hall on Saturday night with The Fighting 86's.

Jazz vocalist and old skool "cat" Franklin MiCare plays The Van Dyke in Schenectady tonight at 8. $7

Classic Film
The NYS Writer's Institute's film series is showing a classic screwball comedy tonight. "That Uncertain Feeling" Stars Merle Oberon, Melvyn Douglas and Burgess Meredith (way before his Penguin days). 7:30 at Page Hall on the UAlbany downtown campus. Free.

Dance
The Crooked Lake House is holding a "Ballroom, Swing and Latin Dance Party" tonight. There's a free lesson at 7:15 and dancing until 10:30. $10

There's a ballroom night on Sunday at Albany's Polish Community Center on Washington Avenue Extension. Free lessons at 6:15 and dancing from 7-10 $12, $9 members, $5 students.

Local food, local film
The Saratoga Film Forum is screening "Food Inc" and local shorts by Patricia Lane and Sarah Pedinotti on Sunday afternoon at The Saratoga County Arts Center. After the films they're hosting a panel discussion with local farmers. One Caroline and Mouzon House will cater the event. $35.

Old Photographs
If you wander down to the New York State Museum, there's still time to catch the Farm Security Administration exhibit. The temporary exhibit was curated by the staff of the F.D.R Presidential Library and includes photos by Dorthea Lang, Walker Evans and other members of the legendary FSA photographic unit.

Bagel science
We're big fans of bagels here at AOA, but eating them, not playing with them. Still, this sounds fun. On Sunday afternoon at the Children's Museum of Science and Technology, kids can conduct experiments with bagels. They'll learn about methods, variables, hypothesis and fair testing in this hands-on workshop. It's for kids 8 and up, and they have to pre-register. Free for members, $2.00 for non-members. And please don't eat the experiments.

Bad Dates
Home Made Theater's Shuster Play Reading Series continues with Theresa Rebeck's one woman show "Bad Dates" Sunday at 3PM. Free.

No Reservations
Chef, author and TV host Anthony Bourdain returns to Rachael Ray country. Bourdain will be at Proctor's on Sunday night. $20 - $49.50

Support Electric String Players
Huh? OK, so the Columbia High School orchestra wants to bring former Trans Siberian Orchestra member Mark Wood to do a two day "electrify your strings" training. If you shop at the Colonie Center Barnes & Nobel today and tell them you want to support the orchestra, a chunk of the proceeds from your purchase will help out (Hey, if you buy a TSO cd, is that too meta?) Students from Columbia High School will be playing at the store throughout the day.

Comments

Woah, woah. WTF is going on with AOA. Everythings in different places. Oh god I think I'm flipping out. I can't handle this, might have to go home sick.

Editors: Thanks. Disaster averted. It's been that kind of morning.

Grant Lee Phillips and The Winterpills at The Linda tomorrow night!

It is a good news / bad news situation here at EMPAC today in terms of tonight's New Nothing show - the bad news is that Dan Deacon and Nuclear Power Pants have to cancel due to an injury (we hope to reschedule for the spring / future, and we wish Dan Deacon a speedy recovery). The good news, however, is that the replacement is a DJ set by Prefuse 73 (http://www.prefuse73.com/blog/ - http://www.myspace.com/prefusion73) with video by Troy's own lmnopf (http://lmnopf.com/), who will shake Studio 2 in a very different way (dance party!). Prefuse 73 will be throwing down a percussive set that will run from hazy psychedelia to bass-heavy hip-hop to seldom heard sounds from around the globe - be prepared to be surprised and on your feet. You might recall the name lmnopf from the Madlib + Juiceboxxx performance during the EMPAC opening - they were doing up the pixels all over the raised cylindrical screen, and they are now slated to knock it out of the park again. And with Skeleton$ and Luciano Chessa still ready to rock, all systems are set for GO. See you tonight.

Sorry to bump this one more time - Prefuse 73 is now doing a live set, so set your level of excitement to that much more awesome.

eba is doing "Brave New Dances," their annual show of new choreography, tonight and tomorrow at 7pm.

The RPI Players present The Visit, Written by Friedrich Dürrenmatt, Directed by Joe Phillips, and Produced by Samantha Malanche.

Show dates are"

Del McCoury plays Sunday night at the Egg!

The Arts Center in Troy is having a salsa/swing/hustle dance-thing tonight. It's their first of the monthly event.

"Five Women Wearing the Same Dress" by Alan Ball continues this weekend at Albany Civic Theater:

Reviews were good, and audience reaction has been very positive!

RPI replaced a good indie electronica act with a better indie electronica act... at the last minute, no less.

I adore both the Glengarry Bhoys and Anthony Bourdain. It's going to be a good weekend!

There is a contra dance tonight at Hibernian Hall, 375 Ontario Street five blocks south of Madison Ave.

no experience necessary, no partner needed

Beginner workshop 7:45 Admission: $10 (general admission), $5 (students with ID). Please wear sneakers or shoes with clean, soft soles.

Now is my chance to challenge Bourdain to a drinking contest, drink him under the table, and take my rightful place as his sidekick!

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
