A counter with no protest

albany high westboro counter

Paul sent along this photo from the protest Friday night that was intended to counter the Westboro Baptist protest of Albany High's production of the The Laramie Project (which itself was intended to be a response to local protests by WBC earlier this year).

There ended up being nothing to counter, though -- the Westoboro people never showed. [WNYT]

(Thanks, Paul)

WBC, not showing is quite common because it is part of their strategy. They believe that they can waste the time and resources of their opposition by making them prepare for what turns out to be nothing. Also, it makes the people who did show to counter protest not want to come to the next rally against nothing. Really, it is quite effective as it is demoralizing and downright sinister. I hope as time goes on that groups like the WBC will fade from existence and humans can feel free to be themselves without fear of persecution. In the mean time, well done AHS, and friends!

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
