The tree is lit -- with a bang

fireworks

For best results, take a look at it really big.

Sebastien's posted a photo set from the tree lighting Sunday at the ESP.

(This also explains why we heard fireworks last night. It kind of caught us off guard.)

You know, I'm thinking (that's a strong word), considering how many people work in those towers, is any of them reading this blog? If that sympathetic person would be willing to get a photographer in during fireworks, I would gladly repay with... well... I don't know, a big basket of something? But I guess after 9/11, and given the risk of getting fired/caught, that's probably not going to happen :) Could make for good photos though...

So...was this the city of Albany's tree lighting, and the one earlier this week the State's tree lighting?

Either way, cool photos S!

i am not a fan. first of all, how many people were actually out watching these? last year, not too many, from what i remember. second, a lot of people in center square and the surrounding neighborhoods have pets, practically all of whom freak out during fireworks displays. third, fiscal crisis, anyone? i know that fireworks are fun to watch, and i don't want to sound like a wet blanket, but if it were up to me, there would be no fireworks for this event.

The fireworks totally scare pets in Center Square. When they started on Sunday night my fish practially jumped out of my tank!! Poor thing. Ban fireworks in Center Square please for the sake of the animals.

My cat has been really crabby lately. Her attitude is in the toilet. I live on New Scotland. Is there any event/local celebrity I can blame for her behavior?

@Kerosena

Unfortunately, no.

While it's been demonstrated that many small animals can negatively respond to the wave deformation effects of external social stimuli, cats are chemostatically unable to perceive the intentional performics of non-self entities.

In other words, your cat is just a selfish jerk.
Just like mine.

@Justin: great points. I would recommend two things:

1) For your dog: a decent pair of earplugs, or better yet, some lovely dog muffs (yes, mutt muffs, you read it right).
2) For you: a very fashionable tin foil hat.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
