New sounds on old instruments

Thumbnail image for matthew loiaconoWriting at The Rumpus, author Rick Moody writes about what makes music traditional -- and touches on something folks in the Capital Region have known for some time: Matthew Loiacono is awesome:

I bring all of this up because Matthew, I think, despite what you might think from the foregoing embodies the tradition now. In the following way: he totally knows and reveres all the traditional stuff, and he plays a very traditional instrument (though I have now sat around singing with him a few times, and apparently he can play anything with strings on it), and he has the soul of an Old Time music lover. But he describes his music as "new sounds on old instruments," which means that he is also completely up-to-speed on all the contemporary new media approaches to things. For example, he now has a webmail project going where he sends new music to his friends every week.

There's more in the piece. (The part about Matthew starts about halfway down.)

You can sign up for Matthew's weekly email at his site. We're subscribed -- it's good stuff.

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. All Over Albany is for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. In other words, it's for you. It's kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who can help you find out what's up. Oh, and our friends call us AOA.
