Stuff to do this weekend

Snowman.jpg

"Lovely weather we're having..."

Yeah, so the temperature isn't expected to get much above 20 degrees this weekend. Still want to go out and do something?

Yes?

OK, then it better be something good.

Here are a few ideas we found. If you've got other plans, share please.

Don't forget your scarf and mittens. And have a great weekend.

Roller Derby
The Albany All Stars are at it again. The derby girls play their season opener on Saturday night at The Washington Avenue Armory. Doors open at 6PM, whistle at 7:00. Music by Slick Fitty.

Movie season
The run up to Oscar season has arrived. If you want to see all the nominees, you'll need to get started soon. Plus, movie theaters are warm and have popcorn.

Gluten free goodies
Saratoga Restaurant Equipment Supply is holding another cooking class on Saturday from 10 AM to noon. This one is on gluten free cooking. Chef Amy Rota-Poulin from Price Chopper will be making apple crisp pie, pumpkin pie, and chocolate chunk walnut cookies. $50

Music
D.J.s Lazer & Blazer, Properly Chilled and Ryan Kick are at Daisy Baker's Saturday night. Free.

Red Square hosts Rock for Reading with the Stynals, the Foy Brothers, Bent Rail Blues Band. $10 cover to benefit The Junior League of Albany.

Sirsy is at The Lark Tavern on Saturday night at 10.

Frank Zappa tribute band Project/Object is at Rev. Hall on Saturday night at 8. $20

Sean Rowe joins Railbird's Chris Carey for Carey's CD release party at Bread and Jam in Cohoes. $5

Dance
Sunday at 7 there's a ballroom and Latin dance party at the Ballroom on Sunset in Latham. Lesson at 7:15.

Break out your white leisure suit and warm up your pointing finger. There's a Disco Mania dance at The Polish Community Center in Albany tonight at 8. $25

Hockey
The Albany River Rats are at home at the TU Center tonight against the Manchester Monarchs and tomorrow against the Hartford Wolf Pack. Go for the Zamboni, stay for the game.

Saints Basketball
Siena takes on Niagra at the TU Center Saturday at 1:00

Dancing Slinkies?
The TV commercials for The Aluminum Show make it look like Stomp meets Mummenschanz meets your slinky. It's a mix of dance, puppetry and illusion from the creator of Stomp and it seems kind of cool in a really weird way. If you're curious, you can catch it at Proctor's on Saturday at 2 and 8 PM. $20 to $35.

A Taste of Albany
Chefs and sommeliers from more than 50 wineries and local restaurants will be at The Crowne Plaza in Albany this weekend for tastings and pairings in this benefit for Capital Rep. Tonight from 4-8 and Saturday from 1-4. $50

Check out a museum
If the cold is driving you indoors, try one of the local museums. The NYS museum is still hosting "This Great Nation Will Endure," an exhibit of photos from the Farm Security Administration. They've also got an Underground Albany exhibit that's kind of an archaeological look at the city. Or you could check out the mummies at The Albany Institute of History and Art. The Tang in Saratoga has a lot of interesting stuff going on, from a sound map of The Hudson to art based on Jersey barriers and traffic control barricades to Eduardo Paolozz's silk screen images of 20th Century pop icons. If you're up for a drive to The Clark and you like Poe, Saturday is the last day to catch their exhibit based on "The Raven," including paintings by Édouard Manet.

Super Science Sunday
A day of family friendly workshops, hands on activities and demonstrations at The Schenectady Museum and Planetarium. Recommended for ages 8 and older. While you're there, check out the model trains.

Brunch
Wait out the cold over a Bloody Mary and some raspberry oatmeal pancakes at Cafe Madison or an omelette and a mimosa at Quintessence.

Hot stuff
This should be a great weekend for Mrs. London's hot chocolate, Hattie's macaroni and cheese, soup at The Wine Bar and Bistro, or your favorite winter delicacy.

It's a small museum but it's free, and on Broadway, therefore pretty close to... Mrs. London's hot chocolate. Two birds, one stone. Now to be honest: the sound map is, if I recall, an hour long, but the full title is "Elevator Music 15: Annea Lockwood, A Sound Map of the Hudson". It *does* take place in an elevator, so good luck with that :) And there are only 2 floors. The Paolozzi show was gone November 09? Lives on The Hudson should still be there, and there is a good amount to see here, paintings, photos, drawings. Nicole Eisenman: The Way We Weren't and Arlene Shechet: Blow By Blow are worth the detour IMHO, but apparently ended January 3. So what's left at the Tang, that's a good question...

THEATER:
Puppet theater, to be exact, but not just any old puppet theater. It's puppetmaster Ed Atkeson and the Firlefanz Puppets presenting a wild, wild production of "Ubu Rex," a slice of slapstick surrealism by Alfred Jarry, translated, adapted and directed by Oakley Hall III. Adventurous, adult-oriented and decidedly outrageous. At the Steamer No. 10 Theatre at 500 Western Ave., Albany @ 8pm tonight and Saturday; 3pm Sunday. 438-5503.

Heading to the Wine and Dine event at the Crowne tonight!

Was anyone else struck by how much that snowman resembles John Updike?

Hi--I've got a list going, too--it's all kid/family friendly stuff as well as some try-out-snowshoes events in case you're in the mood to embrace the season. It's at: www.capitaldistrictfun.com

Hey, Dog Lovers--there will be an organized search for the lost deaf bulldog "Luna" tomorrow morning in the general vicinity of Loudonville, Corning Preserve etc. Meet at The Crossings in the parking lot near the play ground. This poor dog has been lost for 1 week now, having escaped from Shaker Vet. Hospital on Maxwell Rd. last Saturday.

I know they might have some trouble getting the ball up against Siena, but Niagara isn't spelled like Viagra. :P

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
