Stuff to do this weekend

Mac and cheese

It's warmer -- but still macaroni and cheese weather.

Heat wave!

OK, everything's relative. But the temperature should hit 38 whole degrees this weekend and the sun is expected to make an appearance on Saturday.

So if you're inclined to leave the couch and the DVR behind, here's some of the stuff happening this weekend that we thought might be fun.

Got other plans? Share with the group.

And have a great weekend.

Art Night
Bundle up and check out some of the shops and galleries at Schenectady's Art Night. There's an after party at Moon and River Cafe.

Music
Bearquarium, an eight piece afro-rock groove band is at Red Square tonight at 8.

The Fuze Box brings back its days as the QE2 this weekend. QE2 Revival Weekend starts tonight at 10 with DJ Auryn spinning hits from the industrial days. Saturday is 80's night $5 door charge.

Rory Block plays two sets at The Van Dyck on Saturday night. 6:30 and 9. $22 per set.

Dance
The Georgie Wonders orchestra will be at the Albany Elks lodge tonight at 8. $5

The Saratoga Savoy's first Diamond Dance of 2010 is this Saturday night at The Saratoga Music Hall (upstairs at city hall). Sonny and Perley's Jive 5 are the featured band. $15 gets you music, dancing and food (including Ben & Jerry's). There's a free lesson at 7:30. The party starts at 8.

Theater
Harold Pinter's, "Betrayal" opens this weekend at Capital Rep. This story of a love triangle among friends is told backwards. Here's a bit more about the show including info about a weird homage from "Seinfeld."

The Shuster Play Reading Series continues at Home Made Theater in Saratoga this Sunday with "Distracted". It's playwright Lisa Loomer's humorous look at A.D.D. 3PM. Free.

Movies
The Golden Globes are Sunday and Oscar season has unofficially begun. Pick your own double feature and wait out the cold at the movies.

Hockey
The Albany River Rats are at the T.U. Center tonight at 7 and Saturday at 5.

Ice skating
No, you can't do it on the Empire Plaza. But Swinburne ice rink is still open and there's outdoor skating near the Victoria Pool in Saratoga's Spa State Park.

French cooking
Saratoga Restaurant Equipment is holding another cooking class this weekend. This one is on French cooking. The menu includes lobster bisque with cognac cream, artichoke Francaise with lemon parsley butter sauce, chicken almondine with Béarnaise sauce $65

Egypt, art and mummies
The Albany Institute of History and Art open's Sarite Sanders exhibit "The Eternal Light of Egypt" on Saturday night. While you're there, be sure to check out the mummies.

Eat stuff
You know... food that keeps you warm. Hattie's macaroni and cheese, soup at the Wine Bar and Bistro, hot chocolate. Yum.

Brunch
Yes, we realize this is kind of like, "eat more stuff." But lingering over brunch with Bloody Marys or mimosas kind of deserves its own category. We're fans of Cafe Madison and Quintessence. What's your favorite brunch spot?

Winter markets
Remember the spring and summer weekends wandering the farmers' markets? You can get meats, root vegetables, breads and all kinds of other yummy stuff at the indoor winter markets in Troy, Schenectady and Saratoga.

Comments

Saturday night is Lounge @ Quintessence. Funk, latin, house bliss. Properly Chilled and Lazer & Blazer, and guest DJ Jay Travis. No cover. 10pm.

I saw "Betrayal" last night at Cap Rep's pay-what-you-will night. It's a fabulous production.

If you like traditional music, starting tonight there is a three day event in Albany called The Jam & Sing Thing. Come with an instrument (or two), your voice, your kids... come to jam, sing, socialize and just listen. More info, schedule and prices at
http://jamsingthing.webs.com/

There is a snowshoe race this Sunday at 10:00 in Guilderland.

I am doing the sane thing, and only particpating as a spectator.

There's a "skate-in" at Central Park on Saturday from 1-3 pm. Bring your own skates and shovels.

Had the mac n' cheese last night from Hatties. Mine definitely didn't look like it did in that picture. It was still good though. Gotta try the wings and fried chicken next time!

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
