Icy, Snowy Apocalypse Watch

snowy apocalypse meter 2010-01-28

Here's the situation, straight from the NWS's "hazardous weather outlook":

THE ARCTIC FRONT WILL SWEEP THROUGH THE REGION THIS AFTERNOON. IT WILL BRING A ONE TO TWO HOUR PERIOD OF NEAR BLIZZARD CONDITIONS...A QUICK 1 TO 3 INCHES OF SNOW...AND WINDS OF 25 TO 35 MPH WITH GUSTS TO 50 MPH. THIS WILL RESULT IN WHITEOUT CONDITIONS AND DANGEROUS TRAVEL.

After that: snot-freezing cold. The forecast includes overnight temps in the single digits and sub-zero wind chills.

We've pegged this Icy, Snowy Apocalypse somewhere between "Annoying" and "Winter's Making an Effort" because this afternoon could be tough for a few hours -- but after that it's expected to just be really cold. And, as a hardy northeasterner, you can handle that.

Necessary note: You should take this all with an enormous bag of rock salt. AOA has absolutely no weather forecasting expertise. At all. We do, however, think it's funny how every winter storm is treated like the end of the world. Also: Ellsass, we're sorry.

Comments

I love that 'Ellsass' still has a name-check on the disclaimer.

This whole winter has been "whatever." I can take all the snow mama nature can throw at me but getting drenched by torrential rains in January is a bit depressing.

I'm partial to a new category, "Al Gore was right."

Omigod, 1 TO 3 INCHES!! That's like 2.54 to 7.62 CENTIMETERS!

It's time for some snow. So far I've seen more white flakes on the shoulders of bald men this winter than snow on the ground.

I agree with you James. I hate winter and spend the entire time counting the days til spring, but I don't hate snow. In fact, I've been wanting a good nor'easter to dump two feet on us all month. The way I see it, if we have to suffer through the cold months, nature might as well give us a show.
Plus, it's really fun to get snowed in with a big pot of chili and some board games. Not all the time, just once in a while.

Blizzard reached Clifton Park about an hour ago, Stephen King style. Doesn't look so good. Don't drive north, friends.

Uh yeah, I'd say that so far Whatever and Mildly Annoying are pretty on target - at least in CP

Definitely a "whatever" here at work in Schnectady!

Summer, I agree with you. It IS fun getting snowed in! We've been holding on to 8 hours of Beatles Anthology DVDs for that exact purpose. What if we have to wait until next year?

What's "mildly annoying" about the weather is how people over-react.

Holy Crap... thought the house was going to blow away last night...

one of the funniest, most sarcastic, right-on posts ever. I loved it!! And shared it...

Wow, that 5 minutes of snow... so bothersome...

Yawn.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
