Cat abuse alleged

This week's "What is wrong with people?" story: Albany police say they arrested a man for allegedly drowning a cat in his bathtub and then trying to burn the body in a vacant lot. The APD says additional charges are pending for alleged abuse against other cats the man owns.

Press releases like this need to have a Zoloft prescription attached to it.

He had just adopted the cat - why not just give it back?? I am sure whatever organization he adopted it from has a no questions asked return policy. Urgh. People are scary.

This breaks my heart.

Is there some kind of system in place that prevents these people from adopting ever again?

a large part of me really wants to pay this kid a visit.

Barbarians.

My own rage aside; that is a sign of a serious psychological problem that should NOT be ignored.

@Quito: That's a good question about whether there's some sort of registry.

In California, lawmakers are proposing a bill that would set up an animal abuser registry, similar to the sex offender registry.

See NY Times article: http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/22/us/22abuse.html?scp=1&sq=animal%20abuse&st=cse

There is no national animal cruelty database, but there is a website here: http://www.pet-abuse.com/
The site is kept up by volunteers from media reports of cruelty. Since lots of cases never make the news, not every case is there, but its the best we have.
The Humane Society does keep our own database of people involved in these cases and will not adopt to them. I don't know where he got the cat.
You can see pictures of the cats that survived here: http://blog.timesunion.com/mohawkhudson/

agreed about the need to get this kid some help. this was right near me! what if this guy turns out to be a serial killer one day...scary :o

Caleb Capen's profile on a pet abuse directory. I wonder if shelters are aware of/use this site.
