Yes, they're lumberjacks. And they're OK.

1st Friday
It's 1st Friday in Albany. Albany Center Gallery is featuring fiber artists Jennifer Hunold and Sierra Furtwangler in an exhibit called "The Thread That Binds," and the Marketplace Gallery features NYC artist, Cake. Here's the schedule with details on those and other shows around town.

After you've checked out the 1st Friday art, there are parties all over town.
+The Capital Swing Dance at the Albany Elks Club starts at 8:30 $15
+Singer/Songwriter Jeff Strange is playing the University Club from 8-10
+John Brodeur and Ben Karis-Nix are performing at Tess Lark Tavern. They'll also unveil Brodeur's new music video "Love and Misery" animated by Karis-Nix.
+And the Official 1st Friday after-party at Red Square features the "progressive jazz hop" of The Chronicles.

Hello Pretty City
Laura Glazer is moving her Hello Pretty City show from WRPI to WEXT. And to mark the occasion, she's throwing a party at Valentine's tonight featuring four of her favorite bands: Brown Bird, The Charlie Watts Riots, Pony in the Pancake, and The Landlines. $8

+Schenectady Light Opera opens their productions of "Side by Side by Sondheim." tonight. The review of some of Stephen Sondheim's best work can be seen tonight and Saturday at 8 and Sunday at 2. $12 / $22

Dirty Movie
The Saratoga Springs Public Library is screening a documentary about --dirt. "Dirt" is inspired by William Bryant Logan's book "Dirt: The Ecstatic Skin of the Earth." The film
uses science and humor to examine "the current state of organic matter from which we came and where we will one day return." Saturday, 3pm. Free

Solos^2 @EMPAC
Solos^2 is a chance to experience the amazing acoustics at EMPAC. For the first installment of this listening series two Soprano female voices and piano will be heard in various combinations. Tony Arnold and Haleh Abghari will sing and pianist Jacob Greenberg will perform. Tonight at 8. $15, $Student's, Seniors $10, RPI students $5. **

Film
The NYS Writer's Institute's classic film series continues tonight at UAlbany's Page Hall with the New Wave Italian comedy "Fists in the Pocket." [I PUGNI IN TASCA] It's a black comedy about a man who "kills off members of his family to save them from various medical afflictions." One Italian critic claimed that when it came out "it ripped the collective film imagination to shreds." Free.

Readings
Yes! Reading is back tonight with poets Cara Benson and Patrick Pritchett 7:30 at the Dove Coat Gallery at 306 Hudson St.

Remember the Saratoga Chips series on AOA? Author Mike Hare will be reading from his book Saratoga Lives on Saturday at East Line Books in Clifton Park. The book pulls together real and fictional characters and traces Saratoga's history from a wooded outpost, to a playground for the wealthy, through the depression and into present day.

Kids Expo
Hannaford's Kid's Expo is this Saturday from 10 to 6 on the Empire State Plaza. Music, puppets, performances by Circus Theatricks, face painting and a general kid friendly good time. Free.

Bill Cosby
Break out your loud 80's sweaters and head over to Proctors on Saturday night for Bill Cosby's stand-up show.

College students with axes
Students will throw axes, toss wood, work with chainsaws and highligh old-fashioned logging techniques at SUNY Cobleskill on Saturday as part of the second annual intercollegiate Woodsmen's Competition. You can check it out Saturday from 9 to 4 at the Schoharie County Fairgrounds.

Casey Finn's at 507 Yates St is hosting an event Saturday beginning at 6 PM to benefit the Georgefils Haiti Relief Fund. There will be a plentiful Haitian-themed buffet prepared by Chef Lucy Menard and beverages for purchase at the bar. Admission is $25 at the door, $20 ahead of time. Tickets available at the tavern.


GEORGEFILS BACKGROUND

For more than 20 years, the Georgefils family has owned and operated a free school in the city of Saint Marc, 60 miles north of Port-au-Prince. The family later opened a second school in Port-au -Prince, which was destroyed in the January 12 earthquake. The family is using the Saint Marc school as a staging area to provide goods to people affected by the earthquake.

Marie Georgefils and her family have been shipping goods such as clothes,school supplies, and first aid supplies once a year for over 20 years. This year the needs are endless, and shipping costs are higher than ever. Both goods and cash are desperately needed.

"What I Want My Words To Do To You" will be screened TONIGHT only at The Womens Building (373 Central Avenue, Albany). $ 7 per person. This event is a part of First Friday and V-Day Albany 2010.

"What I Want My Words To Do To You" offers an unprecedented look into the minds and hearts of the women inmates of New York’s Bedford Hills Correctional Facility. The film goes inside a writing workshop led by playwright Eve Ensler, consisting of 15 women, most of whom were convicted of murder.

The awesome rockabilly band, The Blasters, will be playing a show tonight at Valentines - $17
