Where to find suit tailoring?

sewing machine closeupDan emailed today:

I saw the post on custom dress shirts on AOA, but what about suit tailoring?
Right now I'm looking at getting a suit from Indochino, but wanted to get measured and have a place to bring it to get some things tweaked, if necessary.
Last year I had a suit taken in at Hong Kong Tailors on Central, and they weren't too helpful about getting measurements done for an Indochino suit. They also weren't forthcoming on their prices for custom suits. The Indochino suits seem to be good quality, and reimburse for the cost of tailoring up to $75 (their perfect fit guarantee)

Well, we sort of understand why a local shop wouldn't be too interested in taking measurements for a custom suit shipped in from China. But maybe the measurement and alterations are better than no business at all.

So, anyone have suggestions for Dan? We'll widen this question a bit to also include local options for custom suits.

Here's one possibility: Vince Rua, the founder of the former Christoper's menswear store, has his own custom tailoring business now. Custom suits start at $695.

Also: after the custom shirt post, Wanda suggested tailoring from Amore on State in Albany and llcwine suggested Simon's Men's Wear on State St in Schenectady.

I've used Santo's Custom Tailors & Cleaners in Guilderland (2590 Western Avenue) for tailoring off-the-rack suits.

I can't recommend Spector's (in Colonie Center since 2002, near Macy's) enough …

Caruso's, the place featured in the shirts post, will happily make custom suits for both men and women (at a price of course :p). They also have no problem tailoring suits from other stores so I wouldn't be surprised if they would measure you for a suit to be ordered from somewhere else as well!

I'm also not sure if they have any policies on this, but I just got a vintage dress of mine tailored at Colonial Cleaner's (it's also where my classmates used to get our uniforms hemmed/repaired) and they did a lovely job. I wonder if they'd measure for suits as well :)

I highly recommend Juanita and Armand at Tailorama on Clinton Avenue in Albany. My boyfriend and I have had many things tailored there, including a few suits recently; they turned out great. Juanita and Armand have been there forever and are great people.

Best Cleaners has 3 European trained seamstresses and everything I have taken to them has been wonderful and the turn-around time has been great.

Best is the best!

My husband just had some of his Joseph Banks suits altered at Caruso's on Western Ave in Guilderland. They did a great job at a very reasonable price.

I had my wedding suit tailored at Cosimo's on Western Ave, actually very near Caruso's. They did a fine job at a good price.

Amore Clothing on the corner of State and Eagle streets (top of the hill right across from the Capitol).

I ordered a brand new suit from them for my wedding last fall and it fit like a dream, and the service was impeccable. A very friendly, family-owned business (turns out my wedding date was the 51st anniversary for the senior Amore).

I would definitely go there for future alterations to shirts/suits bought elsewhere, too.
