Being of German heritage, I actually had lederhosen as a kid. (Odd for a female, though.) I liked the the small side sheath for a knife.
Of course, I also had a dirndl, which I still have in my attic.

Rule of thumb: if The New York Times does a trend article on something, it's not really a trend. See also: the beer belly, Christian Mixed Martial Arts organizations, etcetera.
