Parents
New York State's highest court ruled today in a unanimous decision that the non-biological parent in a civil union is a legal parent. The case arose when a lesbian couple separated after a Vermont civil union and the non-biological mother sought visitation rights to the child born during the relationship. Jesus, I know that divorces (probably not the right term here) are messy and make people do crappy things to each other, but come on. The biological mother's lawyers had to argue that the custodial rights granted to couples of civil unions should not be equal to those of heterosexual married couples. Can you imagine the gall that the this woman, a lesbian, had to have to make that claim.
