My Exit: Justin Lake Behan
Every Monday night our friends at WEXT do this thing called My Exit -- local listeners get to come into the station and program an hour of music. So we thought it'd be fun to find out a little bit about these people and why they picked the songs on their play list.
Here's tonight's person:
Who?
Justin Lake Behan from Berne. Â
How would you describe your musical taste?
Like many WEXT listeners, my musical interests are varied - from classic rock to New Wave to jazz and everything in between. However, I find myself often circling back to story tellers. If they have a really great hook in their songs, all the better. Â
I love Ben Folds', The Killers', Shawn Colvin's, Dar Williams', and Bruce Springsteen's way of talking about every day struggles with brutal and naked honesty. I get lost in the big sound deluge of The Who, Led Zeppelin, Space Hog, and Blackalicious. And then there are new found favorites like Son Volt, Brandi Carlisle, and Spoon. For me, it's eclecticity all the way.Â
A few songs from Justin's My Exit show:
"Not The Same" Ben Folds - Rockin' The Suburbs - Ben Folds has a way with making it personal. There is a vulnerability in his voice but power in the message.
Â
"Easy" Barenaked Ladies - Barenaked Ladies Are Me - Much like Ben Folds, BNL places me back at those moments in life when I paused and took the time to look around. They are masters of matching upbeat melody to brooding lyrics.
Â
"Real Waste of Food" - Space Hog - The Hogyssey - Space Hog died before its time. They are a symphony of rock power with Bowie-esque oddity.
Â
"Rock & Roll Woman" Buffalo Springfield - Retrospective - I love the harmonies involved with Buffalo Springfield and Crosby Stills & Nash. It's a shame that there aren't more groups out there now-a-days who utilze three or four part harmonies.
Â
"Your Saving Grace" Steve Miller Band - Your Saving Grace - Early Steve Miller Band music is a tour de force of California country pop. There is serious groove in Steve Miller's meticulous melodies. Modern bands like Dawes can be traced back to bands like this.
You can hear Justin's My Exit show tonight at 8 on 97.7 or at exit977.org.
Here's how to schedule your own My Exit show on WEXT.
Say Something!
We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
